HHS golf teams meet Mac Hi Tuesday, Mar. 28. the Hep pner High School boys' and girls' golf teams met Mac Hi of Milton-Freewater at Willow Creek Country Club with "lots of inexperience but plenty of enthusiasm," said Heppner's Coach Duane Neiffer. The meet marked the opening of the season for the Heppner teams. Team scores for 18 holes were: Heppner varsity boys 351. Heppner girls scored 227 for nine holes of play. Neiffer reported a very windy day up to 25 mph, plus some rain. Individual boys' medalist was Todd Crittenden of Mac Hi with 78. HHS girls take 1st The Heppner girls' track team ran. jumped and tossed their way past 24 other teams to come home with the first place championship of the Condon Invitational track meet last Saturday. "It marked the first time in the history of HHS that the Hep pner girls won an outright championship. " said Head Coach Dale Conklin. The girls' onslaught on the team title was led by Pam Orr who came away with the individual high point trophy for the girls. She won the 300 hurdles in 0:51.8. was second HHS girls Heppner High golf teams met Riverside High at Boardman on Monday, with Riverside taking the lead in all but the girls' match. Heppner girls scored 198 to Riverside's 202. Heppner varsity boys shot 352 to RHS's 315. Heppner JV boys scored 425 against River side's 346. Varsity team scores were Hermiston 297, Enterprise 320 and Heppner 323. Medalist for the tournament was Troy McCadden of Enterprise with a 70. Low for Heppner boys was Pat Struthers with a 75 and low for Heppner girls with a 103 was Jody Matteson. Junior Varsity team scores were Hermiston 340 and Heppner 437. son had 50 for nine holes for the Heppner girls. Girls medalist was a tie between Anne McLaughlin and Jodi Mattison of Heppner and Kim Lewis of Riverside who all shot 48. Heppner Coach Duane Nei fer remarked. "I was pleased with the improvement shown. The Heppner boys varsity shaved 31 strokes off their previous score. David Green improved by 1 16 strokes alone. Dana Reid carded a personal best, 51, eight strokes lower than her previous score." Teens Sherry Clement Heppner Sherry Clement is the daughter of Bruce Clement. She has shown continued improvement academically and plans to continue her education next fall at Blue Mountain Community College where she will study accounting. While in high school Sherry has participated In volleyball, basketball and track. She is currently vice-president of her class, a member of National Honor Society, H-Club and GAB. She won second place in the Soroptomist Citizenship Award and the Elks Most Valuable Student Contest. Eric Pointer Ione Eric Pointer, a freshman from lone High School is Interested in computer science. His C.P.A. for the first semester was 4.0. He has represented Ione in the district spelling contest for the past several years as their winner in his age level. His hobby is building models. During the 1982-83 basketball season, Eric played on the Junior Varsity team and kept statistics for the varsity games. Eric Is the son of Kathi and Hank Pointer. TEENS OF THE MONTH SPONSORED BY:. Wah tonka of The Dalles and Sher man County of Moro finished ahead of lone with 103 and 68 points respectively. Denny Starr set a new school record in winning the Javelin with a throw of 1640". Starr broke his own record by 4 V. He also tossed the discus 109'0" good enough for second, while shot putting 38'4". Mike Douglas ran the 1,500 and 3,000 meter distances in 4:39 9 and 10:15.9, placing fourth in the 1,500 and third in the 3,000. HHS tracksters open season with bad weather, good marks Heppner tracksters opened the 1983 season under blustery conditions, but despite the weather, turned in some very good marks, reported Head Coach Dale Conklin. No team scores were kept in the Pendleton All-Comers meet as the local thinclads competed against Pendleton, Ukiah and Pilot Rock recently. John Mover and Stephanie Payne topped the Heppner efforts. Moyer turned in per sonal bests wiht a 0:11.5 clocking at 100 meters and jumped 19-10 in the long Jump and 39-8 in the triple Jump. Payne, competing in the pen tathlon (a five-event competi tion), long jumped 16-1 and ran the 100-meter in a wind aided 0:12 7. Patton leaped 6'2" in the high Jump for third and ran the 100 meters in 0:11.9, tying three others for sixth. Hams was second in both the long and triple jump, going 20' IV and 3911" respectively. Both ran the 200 meters, Patton in 0:24 6. Hams in 0:25.7; how ever, neither placed. Shot putter Don Doherty added another point with a 38'8" sixth place perfor mance. The 440 yard relay team of Howard Leavltt, Don Taylor, Hams and Patton placed fifth with a 48.1 clocking. Taylor was second in the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 0.17.1. In addition he went 5'2" in the high jump and hurdled the 300 meter intermediates in 0:47.8. jumped, threw the shot and ran the 800. Pam Orr also competed In the pentathlon and had top marks in the shot put. high jump and 800 for the locals. Alex Lindsay was the long boy participating in the pentathlon and jumped a personal best 18-7 in the long jump. Tiffany Lawson ran 0:13 4 in the varsity 100 and also ran 0:287 in the 200. placing in each of those events. Janelle McElhany placed second in each of the hurdle races, running a 0:18 4 in the highs. Jodi Padberg placed in the varsity 800 and 1.500 meters with Anne Murray and Sherry Clement placing in the throw ing eventa. Nancy Martin placed in varsity 4O0. John Martin won the varsity . Randy McCaber heaved the javelin 1035" and ran 0:27.7 in the high hurdles. Scott Barnett hurled the discus 94'fl". Another hurdler, Brian Douglas, registered 0:50.4 and a 2:25.0 In the intermediate hurdles and the 800 meters respectively. Mark Meyers showed 2:26.0 in the 800 and 5:00.0 in the 1.500. Jumper-sprinter Howard Leavitt dashed 0:57.4 in the 400 meters and went 171 1" and 37'V," in the long and triple Jumps. The mile ref team of Meyers, Darrln Pad-' berg, McCabe and Brian Douglas ran 4:11.8. Next up for the Cardinal tracksters will be the Morrow County Invitational at Uma tilla on April 9 at 11 a.m. and a six-way meet on April 12 at Heppner at 4 p.m. 1.500 and was second at 3,000 meters. Wesley Marlatt placed in both shot and discus. Lisa Wilson placed in the distances. Placing in the novice event were Kim Wright, hurdles; Joanna Bown. sprints; Melln da Eubanks, shot and discus; Lana Reid. distance races; and Katrina Johnston, sprints. Rob Borst won the novice 1.500 meters and Jerry Anderson was second Chris McLaughlin placed in both hurdle events. Complete meet results were not available. However, it was learned that Stephi Payne won the pentathalon competition with 1.498 points. Second was Pam Orr with 1,490 points. Alex Lindsay placed fifth overall in the boys' varsity pentathalon.
