HHS golf teams
meet Mac Hi
Tuesday, Mar. 28. the Hep
pner High School boys' and
girls' golf teams met Mac Hi
of Milton-Freewater at Willow
Creek Country Club with "lots
of inexperience but plenty of
enthusiasm," said Heppner's
Coach Duane Neiffer. The
meet marked the opening of
the season for the Heppner
teams.
Team scores for 18 holes
were: Heppner varsity boys
351. Heppner girls scored 227
for nine holes of play. Neiffer
reported a very windy day up
to 25 mph, plus some rain.
Individual boys' medalist
was Todd Crittenden of Mac
Hi with 78. Coming in close
behind was Jon Mithcell of
Heppner with 79, taking low

HHS girls take 1st
The Heppner girls' track
team ran. jumped and tossed
their way past 24 other teams
to come home with the first
place championship of the
Condon Invitational track
meet last Saturday. "It
marked the first time in the
history of HHS that the Hep
pner girls won an outright
championship. " said Head
Coach Dale Conklin.
The girls' onslaught on the
team title was led by Pam Orr
who came away with the
individual high point trophy
for the girls. She won the 300
hurdles in 0:51.8. was second

Riverside taking the lead in all
but the girls' match. Heppner
girls scored 198 to Riverside's

previous score. David Green
improved by 1 16 strokes alone.

best, 51, eight strokes lower
than her previous score."
Teens
Sherry Clement Heppner
Sherry Clement is the daughter of Bruce Clement. She
has shown continued improvement academically and plans
to continue her education next fall at Blue Mountain
Community College where she will study accounting. While
in high school Sherry has participated In volleyball,
basketball and track. She is currently vice-president of her
class, a member of National Honor Society, H-Club and
GAB. She won second place in the Soroptomist Citizenship
Award and the Elks Most Valuable Student Contest.
Eric Pointer Ione
Eric Pointer, a freshman from lone High School is
Interested in computer science. His C.P.A. for the first
semester was 4.0. He has represented Ione in the district
spelling contest for the past several years as their winner in
his age level. His hobby is building models. During the
1982-83 basketball season, Eric played on the Junior Varsity
team and kept statistics for the varsity games. Eric Is the
son of Kathi and Hank Pointer.

Competing against 24 other
schools and a stiff cold wind
all day, the Ione boys track
team placed third at the Con
don Invitational on Saturday,
April 2, with 6m points. Wah
tonka of The Dalles and Sher
man County of Moro finished
ahead of lone with 103 and 68
points respectively.
Denny Starr set a new
school record in winning the
Javelin with a throw of 1640".
Starr broke his own record by
4 V. He also tossed the discus
109'0" good enough for second,
while shot putting 38'4".
Mike Douglas ran the 1,500
and 3,000 meter distances in
4:39 9 and 10:15.9, placing
fourth in the 1,500 and third in
the 3,000.
HHS tracksters open season
with bad weather, good marks
Heppner tracksters opened
the 1983 season under blustery
conditions, but despite the
weather, turned in some very
good marks, reported Head
Coach Dale Conklin.
No team scores were kept in
the Pendleton All-Comers
meet as the local thinclads
competed against Pendleton,
Ukiah and Pilot Rock
recently.
John Mover and Stephanie
Payne topped the Heppner
efforts. Moyer turned in per
sonal bests wiht a 0:11.5
clocking at 100 meters and
jumped 19-10 in the long Jump
and 39-8 in the triple Jump.
Payne, competing in the pen
tathlon (a five-event competi
tion), long jumped 16-1 and
ran the 100-meter in a wind

Jumpers Tim Pat ton and
Craig Hams also had a fine
day. Patton leaped 6'2" in the
high Jump for third and ran
the 100 meters in 0:11.9, tying
three others for sixth. Hams
was second in both the long
and triple jump, going 20' IV
and 3911" respectively. Both
ran the 200 meters, Patton in
0:24 6. Hams in 0:25.7; how
ever, neither placed.
Shot putter Don Doherty
added another point with a
38'8" sixth place perfor
mance. The 440 yard relay team of
Howard Leavltt, Don Taylor,
Hams and Patton placed fifth
with a 48.1 clocking. Taylor
was second in the 110 meter
high hurdles in a time of
0.17.1. In addition he went 5'2"
in the high jump and hurdled
the 300 meter intermediates in
0:47.8.
