Donny Benson W.C.C.C. ladies play to determine champs The ladies of Willow Creek County Club recently com pleted tournaments to deter mine club champions in match and medal plays, reported a club spokesperson. In charge of all club tournaments were Bev Gunderson and Wanda Willis. Pat Edmundson and Bev Gunderson tied at 83 to be come co-champion in the Medal Play Tournament held Thursday, August 19. Linda Shaw was second in the championship flight with an 84. In the first flight. Muriel Palmer won with an 87 and Heppner woman's art work on display in Pendleton Heppner artist Pauline Matheny presently has sever al of her oil paintings on display at Western Heritage Savings & Loan Association in Pendleton. The paintings will be shown throughout the month of August. The subjects of her oils are mainly western art and also include Indian portraits. Mrs. Matheny has been in structed by various profes sionals during the past 13 years, beginning with Dr. Mc Devitt, then Blue Mountain Community College art in structor. She admits her fav orite instructor western artist Robert Thomas, formerly of Richland, Wash, and present ly of Boise, Idaho. Thomas won the Best of Show award at Ellensburg. Washington's Northwestern Show recently. Thomas teaches and shows his art work throughout the north and southwest. Mrs. Matheny and her hus band, Orville are wheat ranchers. She says Orville is her main critic and encour ages her along with the rest of her family. Junior bowlers are asked to sign up for the 17 week session prior to Sept. 11. The first few weeks for juniors will be devoted to instruction, said Smith, with league play to follow. Individual sessions will be Marilyn Bigelow placed second with an R9. In the second flight. Norma French was first with a score of 91 and Dorris Graves second with a 97. Pat Edmundson had long drive. Wanda Willis K.P. on no. 12 and Bev Wilson K.P. on no. 4. Lorena Jones led the nine hole group with a 47. She also won long drive and K P. Lota Tibbies was second and Mary Beamer third. However, . a fee for instruction will be charged. Benson, 19, formerly of The Dalles, moved to Heppner with his wife Kimberly about one month ago. He Is doing maintenance work on machinery and drilling bowl ing balls as well as instruct ing. Benson worked at West Gate Lanes at The Dalles for one year before moving to Hep pner. There he also did main tenance work, drilled bowling balls and instructed a junior league. Introducing Our New Certified Instructor Donny Local teacher receives masters degi :ree Sue Zanne Duncan, a third grade teacher at Heppner El ementary, received a masters degree in education from Eastern Oregon State College on August 13. While teaching and keeping up a home for five, she main tained a four point grade average during the time she was earning her degree. Besides teaching third grade, Duncan Is also certified to teach speech correction and remedial reading and has worked in both fields In Min nesota as well as in Oregon. Besides teaching, she Is in terested In painting, drawing, and her horses. Her husband.
