SEPTEMBER 2. 1982 Dougherty captures Heppner saw one of its largest rodeos this past week end as more than 170 cowboys and cowgirls competed in the WRA-NRA Rodeo Saturday and Sunday while 70 Morrow County contestants competed Friday night. Cliff Dougherty of Heppner captured the Morrow County All-Around title Sunday as he placed first in Morrow County team roping, first in steer wrestling and fifth in calgary cow milking. Dougherty walk ed away with the Severe Bros, saddle donated by Morrow County Grain Growers and $50 given by Pettyjohn Oil, lone. A Boardman cowboy rode away with the Morrow County calf roping saddle given by Kinzue Corporation. Jack Mc Gwire had a time of 29.32 on two head to win. Pat Schwartz. Heppner, was second with a time of 30 93. He was awarded a pair of boots from Gardner's Mens' Wear. Mike Currin, Heppner. was third with a time of 32.67 and he m-lvl a (tilt certificate" from Columbia Basin Electric Co-op The suicide race drew ex citement from the crowd on Sunday as three riders raced up the hill behind the arena and then down the hill through the course and came to a finish in front of the grand stand. Debra Palmer of lone won the event, followed by Ken Moorehouse, Arlington and Dick Terrill. Heppner. Palmer won a trophy sponsor ed by rodeo board. In the businessmen's don key race, Blackhorse Tavern took first with a time of 54.60. Bucknum's Tavern was second with a time of 1:02. There were 16 teams vying for the first place plaque. In the Morrow County show, Terri Kobinson, Heppner, won the Wranglers cow ride with a score of 56. She was presented a pair of spurs sponsored by Court Street Market and Court Street Processing. Tony Cur rin was second with 54 and Don Kindsfather was third with 52. Calgary cow milking was won by John Moyer and Casey Anderson, both of Heppner. They were awarded spurs that were donated by Jim Hayes Farmers Insurance, Mike Gray, consignee for Union Oil, The Heppner Gazette-Times, -S 4 J Market, and Heppner Bowl. The Morrow County steer wrestling winner was Cliff Dougherty with a time of 13.09. He won a horse blanket sponsored by Sid and Randi Brit t and Britt Excavating, all of Heppner. Second place went to Ron Currin, Heppner with a time of 17.20 and Sid Britt was third with 19.01. The times were on two head. The Pee Wee barrels event was won by Jennie Currin, Heppner, with Steve Hoffman of Lexington taking second place. Maureen Healy, Heppner, captured the fastest time in barrel racing with a time, of 17.77. She won a watch from Peterson's Jewelers. A set of steak knives sponsored by Coast to Coast was awarded to the second place winner with a time of 18.80, Gail Papineau, lone. Randi Britt placed third with a time of 18.85. Marrow County's Morrow County open calf roping during Fridays per formance saw Dick Hoffman, Lexington, capturing first place with a combined total on two head of 25.77. He won a horse blanket donated by Les Schwab Tire Center, Ray Boyce Insurance and Van Arsdale Construction. Second place went to Mike Currin with a time of 25 98 and third , to Ron Currin with 34.10, both of Heppner. The team of Cliff Dougherty and Monte Evans, Heppner, won the Morrow County team roping with a time of 40.29 on three head. They received buckles sponsored by Gard ner's Mens' Wear. Ron and Tony Currin took second with a time of 50.66 and Don Kinds father. Lexington, and Mark Jarvis, Heppner, followed with a time of 51 08. Breakaway roping was won by Maureen Healy. She re ceived a pair of spurs given by Royce Fulleton, Heppner. Second place was awarded to "ndt Dougherty, Heppner and she received a $25 gift certifi cate from Coles House of Fashion. The results from the WRA NRA show held Saturday and Sunday saw Sam Willis of Redmond capturing the all around title. Willis won a pair of silver spurs given by Wood's Western World, Herm iston. He also won the calf roping title with a time of 10.64 and picked up a horse blanket donated by Dan McBride's Body Shop, Heppner Auto Parts and Heppner Chevron. Willis took the Saddlebronc riding as well with a score of 70. He received spurs from Wagon Wheel Restaurant, Blackhorse Tavern and Cat's Arco. In bareback riding Bill Beamer of Spokane, Wash, topped the field with a score of 73. He received spurs from Cal's Cafe and Lounge, Pig Iron, and Pettyjohn's Farm and Builders Supply. Bull riding champion was Mike Walter of Odessa, Wash ington with a score of 69. He received spurs from Millie's Barber Shop, Country Shears, Donna's Beauty Shop, and Trisha's Beauty Shop. Team roping spurs were awarded to Larry Patterson of Pendleton and Hughie Rey nolds of Quinsey, Washington. They had a time of 7.84. Their spurs were donated by Green Feed & Seed and Tri-County Seed Cleaning. A time of 3.87 took steer wrestling top honors by Rod Hostetler of Asotin, Washing ton. His horse blanket was presented by sponsors Central Market, Lexington Lumber and B & B Chevron. Patti Miller of Powell Butte with a time of 18.09 won the barrel racing event. Spurs were given for this event by Miller 4 Sons Welding, Shoe Box, and M & R Floor Cover ing. Breakaway Roping honors went to Dana Stovner of Coun cil, Idaho with a time of 4.02. She received a rope bag from Turner, Van Marter and Bry ant Insurance. Tentative Bv M R Y ANN ( EIU I.I.O A tentative intergovern mental agreement with the cities of Boardman and Hep pner was worked out with Morrow County Court August 25. The city-county agreement, which provided Heppner with the transportation of city pri soners and an emergency dis patch service by the county, had expired July 1. The Hep pner City Council refused to renew the $6,000 contract when the county, not wanting the initial responsibility, ask ed that the city make the first prisoner transport. Sat. " VJWv city-county agreement reached The city of Boardman also turned down the renewal, cit ing that they were already transporting their own prison ers to Umatilla County, The compromise was made last Wednesday between Boardman Mayor Jerry Peck, Heppner Mayor Cliff Green, and members of county court. The agreement states: 1. The county would con tinue to transport all Heppner prisoners. 2. The city of Heppner would pay Morrow County $1,200 to cover the cost of transporting prisoners plus Heppner 's es timated 15 percent use of the county's teletype. winners announced Don Briggs, with Tom Hen rich, second.
