May 30. at Willow Creek Country Club. When supplies exceed the demand, the product is inexpensive. When supplies are low and the demand is large, the prices go up. This is very true in the meat department. Slimmer means harhecue lime and lhat calls for quick cooking lender meals such as steaks, chicken and pork chops. As a result, demand is heavy for these ilems and prices move upward because supplies can't expand that quickly. There is something you can do to shortcut this attack on your pockethook. Watch the advertised specials. Different stores feature one or more of the more popular cuts each week. Buy enough of the featured cuts for the current week and some extra cuts to freeze for summer use. The current budget prices on rmfKF.N should put shoppers in a stock-up mood. It would also be a money-saving idea to purchase PORK and BKKK for current eating and for later barbecuing. Fresh FISH. including SNAPPF.R. PFRCH. COO. and SOLE is in good supply. Spring LAMB is in the markets. There has been no change in lamb prices. It's near the end of the NAVEL ORANGE season. Prices are reasonable but quality is only fair. California STRAWBERRIES should be in good supply for another couple of weeks. Oregon berries, weather permitting, will start in early June. California PEACHES. NEC TARINES. RED BEAUTY PU'MS. APRICOTS and CHERRIES are just starting at luxury prices. However, the crops are large and prices will soon trend down. More WATERMELON and CANTALOUPE are now com ing from the Imperial Valley in California. Ixwk for lower costs and better quality melons. Ijtst year's record-breaking APPLE crop has made it possible for us to have apples at reasonable prices this late in the season. CA storage apples taste almost as fresh as when they were picked. Uran ny Smith apples from New Zealand are in some markets. Prices are higher than last year. This year's record large AVOCADO crop is giving us prices that are pleasantly low. There is also a plentiful LEMON crop at reasonable prices. Now is the time to freeze RHUBARB. Supplies of local vegetables are increasing. LEAF LET TUCE. SPINACH. MUSTARD GREENS. BOK CHOY. EN DIVE and new GREEN CAB BAGE are local. SUMMER SQUASH, both yellow and green, is good quality and moderately pric ed. There will probably be no break in CELERY prices until early June when more celery will be available. California CUCUMBERS are plentiful and prices have leveled. Good quality CORN is coming from the Coachella Valley. TOMATO quality has improved and cost has moder ated. Suppliers say POTATO prices will likely go even higher. This could be a good time to occassionally serve rice, macaroni or noodles. i
