I urn V r Member of lone High School's saxophone quartet try to warm up (literally) at an impromptu outdoor concert Tuesday morning at Heppner City Park, as temperatures hovered around the freezing level. The quartet is preparing for a concert at lone High School on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature beginning lone Band students (4th graders), intermediates (5th graders),; junior high members (Gth, 7th and 8th graders), the lone High School Chorus, the lone High" School jazz band and the saxophone quartet. Members of the cool quartet are Chris Rietmann, lone High School junior; Gene Sartain, lone School band director; Sylvia Ladd. IHS freshman; and Barney Rea, IMS senior. School readiness program slated Nov. 20 The last session of the school readiness program has been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p m. at the Heppner Elementary School multi-purpose room, Pat Edmundson, first grade teacher has an nounced. Heppner A series of seminars for Heppner High School juniors a md seniors and their parents ms been scheduled for con- ecutive Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the high school Following is a synopsis of the seminars supplied by HHS counselor, Michelr Portmann. Seminar I : "How to Pick a Winner," Nov. 13 Ttiis seminar will cover the variety of reasons to pick one college over another, Jnfor mation will be given on many of the Oregon achools includ ing both public and private, four year and two year colleges. Seminar II: "What Are They Talking About?.' Nov. 20 This week's topic will in- dlude discussion of the term lology used such as hours, major, greeks, co-op, se quence, etc. During this ses sion students will actually work out schedules using registration materials from Blue Mountain Community College. This will involve the use of college catalogues, schedules of classes and registration forms. Seminar III: "Prepare for the SAT," Dec. 4 - During this session students will finalize schedules and work on the SAT materials. This is not a cram course, but rather, an opportunity to try the different types of ques tions and review some test taking techniques. The SAT will be given on Saturday. Dec. 6. Seminar IV; "How Will I Pay For This?," Dec. 11 -Counselor Michele Port- Heppner Newg David, April, Christopher and Andrew Sykes were over night visitors to Yakima, Oct. 25. If there are topics not mentioned that you would like to see covered just let me know." On Nov. 24 a representative from Blue Mountain Com munity College will visit Heppner High School. Pat Loughery, Dean of Students, will present facts and figures about college. The program, which is free of charge, is sponsored by the Northwest Foundation and Morrow County Schools. Refreshments will be served ute order blanks for announce ments, caps and gowns, and other senior paraphernalia. He will return Nov. 20 to collect the orders Parents are welcome to come to school on that day to help place orders. The seniors decided they would like to have blue gowns for the boys and yellow for the girls Therefore, all girls must order caps and gowns. Boys may borrow from brothers or sisters since the blue gowns "have been used in previous years. Moderne Studios has indi cated that they will be at the school on Nov. 13 and 14 to accept orders for senior pic tures and to lake any retakes necessary. Again, parents are w elcome to come to sehcKil and place orders. Umatilla Forest exceeds mileage reduction goal In an energv reduction . move, the I'matilla National Forest reduced the mileage driven during the first nine months of l!KO by 29 percent over the same period in 1979. Church resource fair cheduled s A "Church Resource Fair," entitled "The Family.. .A Life style for the '80s." will be sponsored by the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon at the Pendleton High School. 1800 N W. Carden. Pendleton, on Friday. Nov. 14. and Satur day. Nov. 15. Delivering the keynote add ress. "Passion and Compas sion in the Family of Famil ies." will be Monsignor Robert Fox. a priest of the Archdio cese of New York. Msgr. Fox, who has an MA in social work, has been called "the prophet of the streets." Registration begins at 7 p m. Friday. At 7:30 p.m. will be "Praise Him. Praise Hymn." a musical celebra tion. Saturday events feature 8 a m. registration, coffee and fellowship: the keynote add ress, workshops, lunch and more workshops. Workshops include "The Clown as Minister." with the Reverend Cathy Barker of the lone United Church of Christ. "Families as Christian Edu cators." "The Hidden Fam ily: Singles." "Family Finan ces." "Cultivating Church Music in the Church and Home." Other scheduled workshops are "Effective Programming for Adults." "Creativity in the Classroom." Lyon of Pilot Rock, has reported for duty with Fighter Squadron 154. Miramar Naval Air Station. San Diego. A 1970 graduate of Pilot Rock High School, and a 1977 graduate of Oregon State University, Corvallis. with a bachelor of science degree. Lyon joined the Navy in September. 1977. His wife.
