FOUR-The Heppner Gaiette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, October Mi, 19X0 z 26th annual Shrine Food Caravan slated Oct. 17 The annual Al Kader Shrine Food Caravan from Eastern Oregon, which is loaded with food for the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, is scheduled for Friday, Octoher 17. This year marks the 2fith consecutive trek which brings nourishing supplies to Port land. The lengthy line of cars and trucks is due to arrive at the 82nd & Sandy site of the Shrine Hospital at about 4:30 p.m., where T5eWoIaygroups and Portland Shriners will assist in the unloading of the cargoes. Over 80 cars, trucks, pick ups and trailers are voluntary participants in the caravan. The procession originates at 7 a.m. in Ontario, where various drivers assemble from the Snake River Valley in both Oregon and Idaho, then pro ceed on the freeway, with other vehicles joining the excursion at various stops along the 375 mile route. Each vehicle carries donat ed food from various individ uals. Shrine Clubs, and other groups of Eastern Oregon, which is delivered to the hospital storerooms. The merchandise includes canned goods, fresh fruits, vegetables and meats, frozen foods, flour, sugar, and assorted other items. Some caravaners also bring apparel and toys for the 0 Lexington news. Delpha Jones Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Stea gall have returned home from an eight-day trip to the Hawaiian Islands.The trip was a senior citizen tour leaving Portland airport with 181 members. As the group was leaving the islands, they met the next planned flight . and greeted Mr. Steagall's sister, Lola Breeding from Irrigon, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Palmer from Heppner and Geneva Palmer and daughter-in-law, Mary Anne, from lone. Mrs. Bertie Pappas who has spent several weeks with her sister, Annetta Klinger, re turned this week to her home in Fresno, Calif. The Rhea Creek Home Extension group met at the Lexington IOOF hall on Tues day for their regular meeting with hostess, Joyce Buchanan, and co-hostess, Virginia Peck, in charge. The meeting was on Aerobic dance open in Heppner Aerobic Dancing classes people find jogging is not for start Monday, Oct. 20, in Heppner and there is still room in the class, according to Nancy Brownfield, Blue Mountain Community College Heppner-area-class coordin ator. "We do, however, need a count of all those people who are interested in taking our aerobic dancing this fall to make sure we have room for everyone," Brownfield said. To reserve space in the class, students are asked to call 676-5039. The class will meet Monday and Thursday eve nings from 7 to 8 p.m. Brownfield ties the excite ment about aerobic dancing to the national interest in phys ical fitness. "As a nation, we're sold on the importance of physical fitness, yet some Creative Arts group meets The Morrow Co. Creative Arts group met at the Colum bia Basin Electric building on Thursday afternoon. Spaces at the Artifactory were discus sed. Also discussed was gett ing instructors for workshops. Bill Kidder, of Ontario, is again the 1980 "wagon mas ter" of the caravan, with John Coats and Chuck Faes coord inating the activity in Port land. Gary Mier, junior coun selor of DeMolay, is the organizer of groups to assist the unloading of the vehicles. During the past 25 years it is estimated the Food Caravan has delivered over 30.000 tons of food, with a dollar value of about a million dollars. Shrin ers expect to have another substantial donation this year. Following the long drive in this 26th Annual Shrine Food Caravan, all the weary driv ers will gather at the Flamin go Motel in Parkrose, where they will join with welcoming Portland Shriners in a cele bration of dinner and dancing. The caravan will arrive at LaGrande at the Husky Truck Stop at 8.30 a.m., at Pendleton at 10:15 a.m. on the SAN East exit, at McNary at 11:30 a.m. at the Quartermaster.
