After being instrumental in bringing the annual confer ence of the Oregon Wheat league to Heppner by extend ing an invitation to that body when it met at Pendleton last year, the Lions Club voted Monday to sponsor the confer ence to be held Dec. 11, 12, and 13. President C. L. Sweek was authorized to appoint commit tees to look after housing, meals and entertainment for the more than 150 visitors expected for the three days. Miss Jacqueline Dobbins, "Aunt Lucia" coach attended the meeting and outlined plans for the presentation of the comedy under the auspices of the club. Heppner High School open ed the gridiron season last Friday by defeating Lexington High on the letter's field, 33-0. Coach Neil Shuirman's lads showed an advantage throughout, both in weight and experience. The local lineup included : Marcel Jones, Lew is Sperry, Bruce Gibb, Jimmy Anderson, Wrex Langdon, Roy Gentry, Earl Thomson, Elmer Hake, Curtiss Thom son; Swindig. Ayres, Morgan and Cox were substitutes. Fvervone is invited to the 'ioneers' reunion Saturday, H-t. 18. at Lexington. A basket dinner will be served at noon and a lunch at six o'clock in the evening. The Heppner and Lexington town teams will play football on the Lexington field, and there will be a free dunce in the evening. Twenty-five Years Ago Jeff W. Carter, manager of the Heppner J.C. Penney Co. store for the past four -undone-half years, will leave here shortly after Nov. 1 to become manager of the company's store in Payette, Idaho, it was revealed here this week. qkirter will be repluced by tichard Brunner of Aberdeen, .Wash. Carter came to Heppner in June 1951 from Bend where he was assistant manager of the Penney store, replacing Jack O'Connor who was moved from here to Fallon, Nevada. The sheriff's office announ ced today that the 1955-56 tax statements will be going out to county taxpayers early next week. According to a story this morning in a Portland paper, Pioneer Memorial Hospital and St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Heppner each received a bequest of $5,000 in the will of the late Mrs. Pauline Quaid who died in September at Portland. The bulk of the estate was left to the state board of higher education to be used in the construction of a psychiatric hospital for the University of Oregon Medical School. Mrs. Quaid, who was the wife and daughter of two of the early settlers in Morrow County, lived here for many years before moving to Port land. The first general storm of fall which hit this area last Saturday droped up to nearly an inch of rain on the Heppner area over the weekend and early this week. Five Years Ago Congressman Al Ullman was the keynote speaker at the dedication ceremonies which Included the dedication of the Port of Morrow's $1.5 million water supply and sewer treatment system and the recently completed Gourmet Foods, Inc., potato processing plant at Boardman, Saturday. Port of Morrow President Oscar Peterson, lone, praised through Ullman for his help in starting the Port of Morrow In 1965. Peterson said, "Ullman saw the need to develop a site for industrial work." The Board of Directors of Columbia Basin Electric Co op, went on record as being opposed to "social welfare" rates. The concern of the board is the rates and policies should reflect the cost of service to classes of consum ers such as small business consumers, residential con sumers. Irrigation consumers and large business consume Navyman receives achievement medal Q (!) Lieutenant (junior grade) John Franklin Cole (pictured above right) was recently awarded the Navy Achieve ment medal. Cole was transferred on Oct. 1 from the "USS Henry J. Stimson (SSBN 655) (Blue)" to the "Trident" training facility in Bangor, Wash., where he will serve as sonor tactics officer. Brad Spencer has assumed the position of resident engin eer at Portland General Elec tric Company's Boardman power project. Spencer will be responsible for coordinating PGE's con struction activities at the site, said a PGE news release. Spencer joined PGE in 1971 after graduating from Oregon State University with a bach elor of science degree in mechanical engineering. Prior to assuming his new position, he was engineering supervisor at the utility's Beaver combustion-turbine plant near Clatskanie, Ore gon. Sheriffs Report Morrow County Sheriff's Department received a report on Oct. 12 of a theft of tires from Simtag Farms. On Oct. 11, Mrs. Parson, from the Last Chance Fruit Stand in Irrigon reported a theft occuring on Oct. 10. Also on Oct. 11 a one-vehicle accident was reported on Highway 207 just out of Lexington. Driver of the vehicle was Fred Morris. An electrical box fire at Desert Spring Trailer Court was reported to the Sheriff's Dept. on Oct. 7. The Boardman Fire Dept. respon ded to the call. On Oct. 5. hunters were reported missing from their campsite. A Sheriff's Dept. spokesperson said that the hunters returned to their camp about the same time a search and rescue team ar rived at the scene. Ray Kalel of Umatilla Ready Mix at Boardman reported someone taking gravel from a rock pit. The Sheriff's Dept. responded. A baler near a work shed was reported to have caught on fire on Oct. 3 by Mrs. David Combs on Wilson Road near Gutenbine Dairy. The Board man Fire Dept. responded to the call.
