Other first teamers were Don Scriven of Prospect and Craig Bowen and Jim Walter of Alsea. Along with Patton and Stefani on the second team were Randy Van Volkenburg and Steve Campbell of Alsea and Troy Stillwagon of Pros pect. The tournament coaches picked the all-star teams. The inability of lone to stop passes from getting inside proved to be the Cardinal downfall along with the consis tent outside shooting of Wol verine Jim Walter. Patton scored the opening bucket on an offensive re bound and Stefani scored two baskets, one with an assist from Treve Peterson to take a 6-4 lead. But two baskets by Walter, one after a steal from Stefani, put Alsea on top 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams played badly in the second quarter with nu merous air balls and a bad shot selection by both squads. Walter was the only player who played well that period as he scored eight points, four on two fastbreak shots and four Dennis Stefani tosses a shot past on 25-foot bombs from the corner. lone only scored four points in the second quarter and trailed 28-14 at halftime. Stefani had eight points at the break to lead lone and Walter had 12 and Craig Bowen eight, all from the inside, for Alsea. But Peterson scored with an assist from Gregg Rietmann and then he scored again with an assist pass from LaRue. Patton scored a three-point play and the score became 32-25. Patton scored another basket and Stefani added two as lone trailed at the end of three quarters by seven, 36-29. A 20-foot shot by Rietmann brought lone to within six points but Alsea scored four points to lead 45-35. lone switched to,half-court press from its usual full-court trap press but it did not fool the well-coached Alsea squad as xi .,Kvlpir -rj . , . j )nh, ir RW riWk fch L Kfc ifc they broke it easily. lone made its last streak with three minutes remaining as Patton scored on another offensive rebound and Riet mann scored on a fast break to make the score 45-39. But instead of continuing the streak, the team broke down and let Alsea get two tftensive rebounds in a row after missed free throws. Alsea connected on 3-of-5 free throws in the final minutes the outstretched arm of Alsea Wolverine Jim Walter (20). and Walter made a fastbreak lay-in at the final buzzer to make the score 50-39. Alsea won the battle of the boards 33 to 30 but lone actually had fewer turnovers in the game, 18 to 14.
