Mark Patton were named to
the all-state second team but
that is all the good news the
Cardinals brought back from
the State B High School
Basketball Tournament in
Baker last weekend.
The team finished fourth in
the four-team tournament los
ing to Alsea in the opening
game 50-39 and to Prospect in
the consolation game 65-64.
Powder Valley won the
State B title for the second
year in a row beating Alsea in
the championship game 69-60.
The quickness of Badger
guard Terry Boesel proved too
much for the taller Wolverines
from Alsea. Boesel scored 31
points in the championship
game and made many steals
and ignited the crowd with his
fancy passing.
Boesel was named to the
first all state team along with
teammate Coby Moulton.
Other first teamers were Don
Scriven of Prospect and Craig
Bowen and Jim Walter of
Alsea.
Along with Patton and
Stefani on the second team
were Randy Van Volkenburg
and Steve Campbell of Alsea
and Troy Stillwagon of Pros
pect. The tournament coaches
picked the all-star teams.
Team trophies were awar
ded to Powder Valley for first
place, Alsea for second, and
Prospect for third place.
Individual medals were given
to members of the first two
teams. Elkton won the sports
manship trophy for the girls
competition and Cove won the
girls cheerleading trophy
while Powder Valley won the
boys cheerleaders trophy.
Cove won the girls State B

lone Coach Del LaRue
admitted that the Cards, who
have had hot and cold streaks
all year, played one of its
worst games of the year in
losing to Alsea 50-39.
The inability of lone to stop
passes from getting inside
proved to be the Cardinal
downfall along with the consis
tent outside shooting of Wol
verine Jim Walter.
Patton scored the opening
bucket on an offensive re
bound and Stefani scored two
baskets, one with an assist
from Treve Peterson to take a
6-4 lead. A nice give and go

point play to put lone back on
top 11-10. But two baskets by
Walter, one after a steal from
Stefani, put Alsea on top 18-14
at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams played badly in
the second quarter with nu
merous air balls and a bad
shot selection by both squads.
Walter was the only player
who played well that period as
he scored eight points, four on
two fastbreak shots and four
Dennis Stefani tosses a shot past

points in the second quarter
and trailed 28-14 at halftime.
Stefani had eight points at
the break to lead lone and
Walter had 12 and Craig
Bowen eight, all from the
inside, for Alsea.
It looked as if Alsea would
blow lone out at the start of
the second half as Steve
Campbell scored two quick
buckets to put the Wolverines
in front 32-18. But Peterson
scored with an assist from
Gregg Rietmann and then he
scored again with an assist
pass from LaRue. Patton
scored a three-point play and
the score became 32-25. Patton
scored another basket and
Stefani added two as lone
trailed at the end of three
quarters by seven, 36-29.
Les Thompson came off the
bench to spark lone with two
baskets in the fourth period
but lone still trailed 40-33. A
20-foot shot by Rietmann
brought lone to within six
points but Alsea scored four
points to lead 45-35. lone

lone made its last streak
with three minutes remaining
as Patton scored on another
offensive rebound and Riet
mann scored on a fast break to
make the score 45-39. But
instead of continuing the
streak, the team broke down
and let Alsea get two tftensive
rebounds in a row after
missed free throws. Alsea
connected on 3-of-5 free
throws in the final minutes
the outstretched arm of Alsea Wolverine Jim Walter (20).
and Walter made a fastbreak
lay-in at the final buzzer to
make the score 50-39.
Alsea won the battle of the
boards 33 to 30 but lone
actually had fewer turnovers
in the game, 18 to 14. Patton
led the rebounding for lone
with 14. lone made 18 of 60
shots from the floor for 30
percent while Alsea made 23
of 47 for 48 percent.
Patton led lone in scoring
with 12 points, Stefani had 10,
Peterson seven, Rietmann six
and Thompson two. Robin
LaRue, Ione's second-leading
scorer, did not score in the
game.
"We took Robin to the
hospital Thursday (the day
before) because he developed
blisters on his eyes," his
father and Coach Del LaRue
said. "The doctor said it was
