The Heppner Gazette-Times, HeppnerOregon, Thursday, October 4, 1979 SEVEN 'Expanding Horizons' theme of National 4-H week; many county programs planned By Birdine Tullis, Morrow Extension Service "Expanding Horizons" is the theme for National 4-H Week, Oct. 7-13, with a number of 4-H events sche duled in Morrow County to coincide with the national dates. National 4-H Week locally serves as a focal point of the program; a time when the past year's achievements are recognized and plans are started for the year to come. The theme calls on 4-H members and leaders every where to become productive, self-directed and contributing members of society. In our rapidly changing world, it is increasingly important that youth learn life skills, prepare for rewarding and satisfying careers, and assume leader ship responsibilities in their communities. We believe Na tional 4-H Week is a perfect time to salute all who make it possible for youth in our county to expand their hori zons through involvement in the 4-H program. Recognizing the ending of past year's activities, 4-H family nights are planned for families of all involved in 4-H, years. Juniors and seniors compete at district level for an opportunity to represent the district at state contest. Many prizes are offered winners in both district and state contest. The state winners in both divisions receive a paid trip to the national contest, as well as other valuable prizes and scholarships. Regis tration forms for a special district contest for adults (25 years and over) are also available. You'll find them at your local fabric stores! as well as those interested in learning more about 4-H opportunities in Morrow Coun ty. North Morrow 4-H family night will be Oct. 11, 6:30 p.m. at A.C. Houghton School, Irrigon. South Morrow will have a similar event Oct. 17, 6:30 p.m. at the 4-H Annex, Heppner. County medals for project achievement will be presented at each event. New members will have the opportunity to enroll and find a club of their choice at both events. In addition to the family events, John and Birdine will visit schools, fourth, fifth and sixth grades, to share infor mation concerning member ship with students. They will be presenting programs at lone School Oct. 8; Heppner Elementary, Oct. 9-10, and A C. Houghton, Oct. 11.
