"You're flirting with danger anytime, with a comeback victory," said lone head football coach Cordon Mey ers, following the Cardinals' 28-22 win over North Powder last Friday. Friday's win marked the second time this season that the Cards flirted with fourth quarter danger to post- last minute wins over opponents. During Friday's contest with Powder Valley, the Cardinals found themselves down 22-20 in the closing 90 seconds of the contest. A drive to recapture the lead had stalled when, in a desper ate attempt to make first down yardage, lone quarter back Dennis Stefani attmept ed a pass to Danny McElligott. A Badger defender was called for interference, giving the Cards and their hometown fans new hope in the form of a first down on the Badger nine yard line. As the clock ticked down, the Cards moved the ball to the four yard line, setting up a quarterback sneak by Stefani to regain the lead. A Stefani to McCabe pass iced the victory cake for two conversion points, making it lone 28, North Powder 22. "Though the Badgers got only 20 yards to ur 55 yards in penalties, they got theirs at that critical point," said Meyers. "We picked it up and went on to score." The Cardnials had led the Badgers by a 20-6 margin at halftime, The redbird scoring began midway in the first quarter, when Stefani carried the pigskin a full yard to paydirt. Eight plays later, Greg Rietmann rushed a half yard to add another six points. Rietmann pulled in a Stefani pass to score the two extra points. The middle of the second quarter found the Cards at their own 15 yard line on fourth down, when Stefani unleashed a pass to Kevin McCabe, who put on a daring exhibition of broken field run ning to advance the ball a record 61 yards, three plays later, the Cards capitalized on a 10 yard Stefani to McElligott pass, leaving lone with what appeared to be a comfortable,, 14 point lead at halftime. But the North Powder team came on strong midway in the third quarter with a 15-yard TD rush by quarterback Terry Boessel.
