"You're flirting with danger
anytime, with a comeback
victory," said lone head
football coach Cordon Mey
ers, following the Cardinals'
28-22 win over North Powder
last Friday.
Friday's win marked the
second time this season that
the Cards flirted with fourth
quarter danger to post- last
minute wins over opponents.
During Friday's contest
with Powder Valley, the
Cardinals found themselves
down 22-20 in the closing 90
seconds of the contest.
A drive to recapture the lead
had stalled when, in a desper
ate attempt to make first
down yardage, lone quarter
back Dennis Stefani attmept
ed a pass to Danny McElligott.
A Badger defender was called
for interference, giving the
Cards and their hometown
fans new hope in the form of a
first down on the Badger nine
yard line. As the clock ticked
down, the Cards moved the
ball to the four yard line,
setting up a quarterback
sneak by Stefani to regain the
lead.
A Stefani to McCabe pass
iced the victory cake for two
conversion points, making it
lone 28, North Powder 22.
"Though the Badgers got
only 20 yards to ur 55 yards in
penalties, they got theirs at
that critical point," said
Meyers. "We picked it up and
went on to score."
The Cardnials had led the
Badgers by a 20-6 margin at
halftime, The redbird scoring
began midway in the first
quarter, when Stefani carried
the pigskin a full yard to
paydirt. Eight plays later,
Greg Rietmann rushed a half
yard to add another six points.
Rietmann pulled in a Stefani
pass to score the two extra
points.
The middle of the second
quarter found the Cards at
their own 15 yard line on
fourth down, when Stefani
unleashed a pass to Kevin
McCabe, who put on a daring
exhibition of broken field run
ning to advance the ball a
record 61 yards, three plays
later, the Cards capitalized on
a 10 yard Stefani to McElligott
pass, leaving lone with what
appeared to be a comfortable,,
14 point lead at halftime.
But the North Powder team
came on strong midway in the
third quarter with a 15-yard
TD rush by quarterback Terry
Boessel. Coby Moulton rushed
for a two-point Badger conver-

continuing to roll in the fourth
quarter, Boesel broke loose
for a 30-yard touchdown run,

conversion rush, putting Pow
der Valley ahead by two
points.
