The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, July 6, 1978 FIVE orrow County three learn politics firsthand Club plans lunch, refreshments for Sidewalk Bazaar shoppers at 1978 Oregon Girls State were among the 274 citizens of Oregon Girls State 1978, held June 11-16 on the Willamette University campus in Salem. Oregon Girls State is an annual program sponsored by the American Legion Auxil iary, Department of Oregon, for outstanding young women who have just completed their junior year of high school. Through participation in sim ulated governments on the city, county and state levels, girls state citizens learn about the democratic process of government. Cindy Kerr, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Harold Kerr, Hepp ner, was elected to the Girls State House of Representa tives. She also served as an alternate to one of the two party nominating conventions at Girls State. Cindy, who will be a senior at Heppner High in the fall, was sponsored by Heppner Unit No. 87, the American Legion Auxiliary. Janet McElligott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry McElligott, lone, was also elected to the 72-member House of Representatives. She served as mayor of one of twelve hypothetical cities at Girls State, and made an unsuccssful bid for State Treasurer. Michelle McElligott, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Don McElligott. lone was elected an alternate to one of the party nominating conventions. She was appointed to her county's election board for the General Election at Girls State. Irrigon news Francis Rose Wilson 9223352 Christian Businesswomen plan July 10 meeting " The Irrigon Assembly of God church has broken ground for a new church building. The architect's plans have gone to an engineer for his approval, then as soon as permits are obtained construction will be gin on the new building. It is felt by the congregation that with increasing popula tion in the area, a larger church and more adequate Sunday School classrooms are needed. ' The church was started in' Irrigon by the Rev. and Mrs. Carl Alquist in 1929. It was set in order as an Assembly of God in 1935 with the Rev. "Firecracker Festival" will be the theme for the Heppner Christian Business Women's Club meeting to be held at the Heppner High school cafeteria Monday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m. The speaker will be Donna Pratt, a licensed well inspec tor from Burns, Oregon. The special feature will be a tole painting demonstration by Phyllis Piper of Lexington. Phyllis is a 4-H tole painting leader and has taught classes through Blue Mountain Com munity College. Anita Davidson injured in Alaska Worden, Jones log straight A's at BMCC Dave Worden of Heppner and Leslye A. Jones of Lexington were among 29 students receiving perfect 4.0 grade point averages . for spring term at Blue Mountain Community College. Other area students making BMCC's honor roll for the spring term included Kim Gutierrez, Richard Keene and Donna Palmer, all of lone; Sharon McCarl of Lexington; Joan Ployhar, and Patti Saling, Heppner; Peggy Brandt of Irrigon; and Terry J. Crowder of Boardman. Named to the Dean's List were Mary Knowles and Bobbi Nielson of Heppner; Curtis Cutsforth of Lexington ; Steve Doherty, Valerie Henderson and Robert Richards, all of Irrigon; Linda Jones, Lewis Lott and Jerry Zielinski, all f Boardman. Anita Davidson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Davidson of Lexington, suffered a broken leg while serving as a counse lor at the Campfire Girls' camp at Cooper Landing,. Alaska. Anita has returned to her counseling duties from an' Alaska hospital, where she was treated for the injury. Her leg remains in a cast, so her activities are limited. They were sponsored by lone Unit No. 95, the American legion Auxiliary. Claude Crawford as pastor. The original church building was remodeled in 1944-45 while the Rev. Emil Schneider was pastor. In January of 1946 this church and the parsonage burned to the ground. By fall of that year a new church had been erected at approximate cost of $4,500. Volunteer labor helped keep cost down and the congregation free of debt. The parsonage was completed for occupancy in 1950, with Pastor and Mrs. Leland Morse and family being the first to live there. Plans for the new building call for a 92' by 60' ediface of 5.520 square feet. Parking facilities will be provided on the same side of the street. A transfer of property has been made to make this possible. The church traded two lots, recently acquired for two lots adjoining the church property. After the Degree of Honor meeting On Tuesday, June 27, Mrs. Lincoln Nash, president of the Carnation Club, held a planning session concerning participation in this year's Sidewalk Bazaar on July 14. The group will prepare to :erve lunch to the public that noon. They agreed to offer diners their choice of sand wiches, salads and pie or cake, the luncheon will be arranged in the lodge's build ing between the First National Bank and the Lebush Shoppe on Main Street. Riverside honor roll posted in final term of year Riverside High School in Boardman recently an nounced honor roll students for the final semester of the 1977-78 school year. Dana Prag, Vicki Daniels, July Danies, Cathy Green, Joan Partlow and Lori Witt all attained perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Those earning averages of 3.5 and above were seniors Cally Broadbent, Vicki Col lins, Marilee Hellberg, Bente Michelsen. Sabrina Murray, Tammy Rock and Cheryl Stubblefield. Juniors on the "A" honor roll were Dana Creamer, Erin Evans, Cheryl Frederickson, Andrea Hadley, Kathy 'Far low, Dawn Johnson, Michele Panages, Linda Mills, Scott Paulson, Tami Reed and Scott Markillem. Sophomores were Kris Ba ker, Joe Daltoso, Carol Ann Donovan, Mari Evans, Suzie Hascall, Wes Haws, Tracy Johnson, Buddy Mills, and Pat Sharkey. Freshmen making the top honor roll were Janice Beyers, Christy Brandt, Pat Cimmi- yotti. Tammy Collingwood, Heidi Conboy, Scott Daniels, Mark Danies, Yvonne Gil liam, Jyl Hobbs, Lisa Mitters dorf, Jim Peck, Verna Voll mer and Larry Wilson.
