Houghton Elementary School this winter, as many students participated in a Read-a-thon for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, collecting $941 for the orgainization. Melissa Woelk, first grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darryll Woelk of Boardman, was recognized at a special all-school assembly held Thursday, April 6, for turning in $137, the most money collected in the event. Melizza earned her prize by reading 40 books and was backed by 35 sponsors. Second grader Joan Piper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Piper of Boardman, won a prize for reading the most books during the Read-a-thon, a total of 42. Both -girls received a copy of the Guinness Book of Records for their efforts from librarian Marshall Hesla, who organized participation in the school. Other top money-collectors in the event were third-grader Ricky Pummel, who turned in $117, and fifth grader Veron ica McDonough, with $101. A prize drawing was held at the assembly for the 50 students who completed parti cipation in the Read-a-thon by collecting and turning in their .. I . . ... ... r X. Vi ft pleased with the response of A.C. Houghton students, espe cially since the school collec ted more money than all the Pendleton schools combined. "We didn't read more books, but we have more generous people in Morrow County," he commented. Also honored at the A.C. Houghton assembly were stu dents who won trophies in the Tri-Star Basketball Contest sponsored by the Hermiston Optimists on March 11 in Hermiston. Physical educa tion instructor Stan Scott presented trophies to Dan Daltoso, first place winner in the 11 year-old group; Tyler Trumbull, third, 11 year-olds; Brian Byrd, second, 10 year olds; Kim Rogers, second, nine year-olds; Shawn Jor gensen, second, eight year olds; and Danny Byrd, third, eight year-olds. f'K it. In February, she and her brother, Frank Mauk of Bismark, N.D., went to Los Angeles, flying from there to Germany to visit Mr. Mauk's son, Lt. Col. Gerry Mauk, Army Intelligence. Lt. Mauk is stationed at Wurtzburg, Germany with his family. Besides having a pleasant visit with the younger Mauks, the pair traveled extensively in Germany, Austria and France, usually by train or bus. After their return to Los Angeles, Mrs. Albert went to Redlands, Calif., where she was met by her daughter and husband, Feme and Mike Healy, and their sons of Roseburg. She returned to Roseburg with them, spending a week there.
