The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, January 5, 1978 THREE ,- V -, x4, The State Highway Department is knocking off one of the corners between Lexington and lone for rock that will be used on a project further down the road. Please see accompanying story. State mines rock near lone It might appear one of those obnoxious curves on the high way between Lexington and lone is getting some attention, but the State Highway Dept. is actually just borrowing a little rock for a repair project down the road. A couple of state-owned bulldozers now sitting va cant because of the weather condition have been remov ing rock from the curve area just south of the Jordan grain elevators. The rock is being used on the high way straight away near Beecher's Cafe where state crews are leveling the road to eliminate a sight problem caused by a dip in the road. According to State Highway officials, the property adja cent to the curve was pur chased several years ago with the hope of eventually improv ing the curve. Since the improvement project remains unscheduled, the Highway Dept. is now mining the rock for Hie leveling down the road. Due to the inclement weath er, no completion date has been set for the leveling project . Boar dm an plan approved at County Court meeting At a County Court meeting held in Irrigon on Wednesday, Dec. 28, the Urban Growth and Comprehensive Plan for the City of Boardman was apx proved by the Court as being in compliance with the county plan. Jerry Peck, David Moon, Jeri Cohen and Dan Creamer spoke in favor of the joint management plan which had been approved by both the Boardman City Council and Planning Commission. In other action, Dan Hoff man, Irrigon, was hired for a CETA position as full-time operator of the Turner Land fill. Four applicants were interviewed. Bids on weed chemicals used by the county were opened with a low bid of $1.64 per pound for Atrazine from Ciba Geigy Co. of Portland accepted. A low bid from Tri-River Chemical, Inc. of Pasco of $4.65 a gallon for 2 4-D was also received and accepted. The combined total of chemical purchases from the two companies is $8,895. Bids from nine companies were submitted. A recommendation from the Public Utilities Commission for the inspection of railroad grade crossings by the road department was examined by the court. Gene Trumbell was reap pointed to another term on the County Planning Commission while Irene Swanson and Herman Green were reap pointed to the Museum Board. Cheryl Ammons was named to replace Hazel Mahoney on the Hospital Board. An updated cooperative agreement with the Forest Service on maintenance of roads in the county"s forests was approved by the court . Jim Kemson of Cal-Am Furham presented a second bill for construction of the Boardman Medical Clinic for $22.00(1 to the court. The court gave permission lo Sheriff Lurry Fetsch to use a utility trailer owned by the county lo transport snowmo biles for winter search and rescue operations.
