(The Cards trailed by only one point at halftime and were within striking distance until the final minutes of play. Dennis Stefani and Kevin McCabe led the lone attack with 20 and 18 points respec tively. Coach Del La Rue said his team played much better than " in their opening game loss to Heppner as they hit on 23 of 63 shots from the floor for a 37 per cent effort. "We were still outrebound ed," LaRue; said of Condon's 42-25 edge on the boards. "But the shots were starting to go in and we were able to get some offensive rebounds." The Cards played the game without, defensive standout Danny McElligott who was out with the flu and La Rue said his presence could have made a difference in the late stages of the game against the quick Condon team. !' 1 i i y. The JV Mustangs are shooting a hot 48 percent from the floor in the young season. 'Sttangs clobber 'Helix at liome Outside shooting by Ken Grieb and strong perform ances by Sam Myers and Gordon Hoffnagle off the bench helped Heppner record a 68-55 win in their home opener against a scrappy Helix team Saturday. Grieb paced the Mustangs with 14 points and Dennis Peck added 12 as Heppner canned 46 per cent of its shots from the floor. Myers and Hoffnagle came off the bench to lead the team in rebound ing, collecting eight and six, respectively. The Mustangs took a 16-10 first quarter lead as Grieb hit four outside shots and Bryan Marlin sank two more. Helix came back to close the gap to 26-23 when Dennis Peck stole the, ball near midcourt and droVe for ( a lay in to give Heppner a five point margin which they1 held at halftime. A couple of steals by Helix's John Terjeson put the Griz zlies on top until back -to-back buckets by Dale Holland and Peck gave the Mustangs a leao' they never lost again. Mustang coach Tom Day credited the win to good team play including valuable contri butions from the non-starters. "They did what they had to do although the defense was a little sloppy at times," Day said. "They actually played better fundamental basketball Friday night (against lone) but a win is a win and it's nice to be 2-0." Day said he was pleased that the Mustangs didnjt crack under the half court press used by the Grizzlies and added that the team showed some good ball handling for this early in the season. Fillies swamp Helix 71-18 Three players hit double figures Saturday as the varsi tv Fillies swamped an out classed Helix team 71-18. The impressive attack was led by Maureen Healy who pumped in 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Wendy My ers scored 16, Diane Holland added nine and Jackie Molla han tossed in nine points to add to the Filly's total. Holland and Myers both grabbed eight rebounds as Heppner dominated all facets of the game. The Grizzlies had a hard time bringing the ball up the court against the Filly defense and rarely were able to get off a good shot. Filly coach Sherri Brock called the game a good team effort both offensively and defensively as Heppner raised its season record to 2-0. JV's clip Helix five !. badly flitting an impressive 53 per cent of their shots from the floor, the junior varsity Mus tangs sent the Helix Grizzlies back into hibernation with a 72-18 rout Saturday in Hepp nef. The Mustangs made good on 34 of 64 shots many of them layins and dominated the hoards with 39 rebounds. Heppner jumped to a 17-0 lead before Coach George Koffler told his troops to cool their heels. Bob Miller was high scorer with 15 points, Richard Schmidt added 14 and Ron Young tossed in 13. Ron Ward and Mike Stookey both grab bed seven rebounds. Ron Ward and Jim Parker both pulled down 10 re bounds and Ron Young added seven as the Mustangs controlled the boards with 52 rebounds in the game. Bob Miller led the scoring attack with 11 points followed by Mike Stookey with 10, Richard Schmidt with 8 and Ward with 7. Heppner connected on 22 of 60 field goals while lone was 13 for 41 from the floor. Les Thompson was the top scorer for the Cards with eight points and Shawn La Rue scored five. Ralph Morter, Mike Conklin and Rick Doher ty each grabbed four rebounds for lone. Mustang coach George Koff ler said he was pleased with the defensive play of his big men but added that a lot of work is still needed in that area, especially in the back court. "We got a good look at everyone and now we know a lot more about our strengths and weaknesses," Koffler said. A total of 47 fouls were called in the game 25 on the Mustangs and Koffler said he would like to cut his team's fouls down to about half that amount in the future. Card coach Gordon Meyers also played all 12 members of his team and said he was satisfied with the results considering the limited prac tice time to date. "Outside of the third quar ter, we did a pretty good job," Meyers said. "There's some potential here and this team will get better." Hermiston edges Fillies 48-44 1 fV A) n Ha j forthe Santa in Your Family JUKIULAK SAW 99 Missed foul shots spelled defeat for the varsity Fillies as they dropped a tough 48-44 contest to Hermiston Monday. The score remained close throughout the contest but the Fillies managed to convert on only eight of 23 attempts from the free throw line. Heppner took a 4-0 lead and stayed on top for most of the first quarter. Hermiston held a slight rebounding advantage for the game as they managed 40 rebounds to Heppner's 38.
