Holland, a 6'1" sophomore, hit three inside field goals and . collected several key re bounds in the opening frame as Heppner connected on five of 14 shots while lone made only one of 13 shots from the floor. Heppner's man-to-man defense forced the Cards to stay outside most of the game resulting in an eight for 44 shooting night. Dennis Peck and Jerry Cutsforth led the Mustang scorers with eight points each while Holland totaled 11 re bounds and Jim Parker grab Fillie JV's top lone in low-scoring opener Inexperience and first-game jitters kept the point totals low but the Heppner junior varsity girls pulled out a 13-11 victory over lone Thursday. Only one member of Filly coach Les Payne's team had seen any basketball action prior to this season and Card coach Martha Doherty said three of her girls were playing in their first game also. Alice Abrams, the only returning Filly, scored four points as did Kellie Ham mond. McCabe was Ione's leading rebounder with 10. The Mustangs only suited eight players for the game and first-year coach Tom Day said he was pleased with the contributions made by each of the team members. "It was a good team effort, especially for the first game of the season," Day said. "We were able to run our plays fairly well until they started sagging on the picks. Once we adjusted to the overplay we started to take advantage of the back door opportunities they gave us." "The press worked well but we hadn't practiced it much so I was reluctant to go with it earlier," LaRue said. "We had some problems dropping back into the man-to-man coverage after coming out of the zone press." LaRue said, his team had trouble reacting to the situa tions at hand and capitalizing on the opportunities. "They just weren't able to relax at all and when the first few shots didn't drop, things just got worse, LaRue said. Robin LaRue, a 150 pound sophomore, was picked as the first team offensive end while Terry Starr, a 155 pound sophomore, received first team linebacker honors. Sophomores Dennis Stefani and Gari Gaustad both were selected for the second team all-star rosters. Stefani was named to the offensive backfield and Gaustad was picked as second team defensive guard. 60 turn out for city basketball With 60 players on the rosters of six teams, the city league basketball schedule will officially open this Sunday. Team matchups and game times are: Watkins vs Summers 6 p.m. Eckman vs. VanMarter 7 p.m. Greenup vs Galbraith 8 p.m. The gym will be open at 5:45 for warm ups. Elks freethroiv shoot set Saturday Basketball sharpshoooters ages 8-13 are invited to take part in the annual Elks Shoot on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Heppner and lone gymnasiums. The competition 25 shots from the foul line is open to all boys and girls in the specified age group and participants can sign up on the day of the contest. Activity will get underway at 10 a.m. at both locations.. Trophies will be awarded in six categories : boys 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13; and girls 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Winners will advance to District competition in Hermiston scheduled for January. AM''- lone gals drop bid at Condon lone girls varsity dropped their second game of the season 38-13 Saturday at Condon as turnovers and fouls continued to plague the Cards. Coming off a Friday night loss to Heppner, Card coach Martha Doherty said her team didn't really get into the game until the fourth quarter and by that time it was "too little too late." Darcy Rea was the leading scorer with eight points and Arietta Aldrich scored four. Rea and Susan Thompson were the leading rebounders for the Cards. Doug Holland popped in 10 points and Dorian Forrar, Robert Bier and Mark Launer each added four points as the Ponies connected on 12 of 48 shots from the field. Coach Jim Ackley said the HEPPNER r Poines showed some good team rebounding but added that turnovers and poor pass ing, especially in the first half, led to several breakaway Pilot Rock baskets. The Fillies maintained a four to six point lead through! out most of the game, never allowing the Cards to close thft gap. Shooting 28 per cent from the floor, the Fillies were paced by Maureen Healy's 12 points and Diane Holland's, seven. Healy grabbed 16 f rebounds and Wendy Myer, contributed ten. Grace and Janet McElligott ' both scored six points and led the Cards in the rebounding department. lone coach Mar- tha Doherty said her team has shown a lot of improvement over last year but added that " the Cards were still hurt by f fouls and turnovers.
