Legion plans potluck Heppner American Legion Post No. 87 and Auxiliary will hold their regular meeting Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Legion Hall. There will be a potluck dinner with the meat funished. After the reports of the summer's activities, plans will be made for the fourth annual Hunter's Breakfast to be held all night, Sept. 30. District 6 will have visita tion from state officers at the lone spellers take honors Two lone students finished in the top five in their divisions during the State Spelling Bee competition held Sept. 3, at the State Fair in Salem. In the 11th grade division, Natalie Tews finished third among 15 county champions while Denny Starr finished fifth among 22 top spellers in the elementary division. Both had earned a trip to the state contest by winning their respective divisions at the Morrow County Spelling Bee held at A.C. Houghton Ele mentary Schools last April. District 6 conference at La Grande Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. in the Legion Hall. Plans for the evening are in the making. This is for both Legion and Auxiliary members. It is hoped that many members from the area will be able to attend. Auxiliary Disctrict 6 Presi dent Evelyn Sweek of Heppner recently installed officers at the Milton-Freewater unit and accompanied by her husband, Clayton Sweek, first vice-commander of Post No. 87, visited the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla. They said they were very favorably impressed with the facilities and the quality of care at the hospital. Soroptimists plan upcoming events The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Ore., Thursday, September 15, 1977 SEVEN School Board meets Sept. 19 Guests at the Soroptimist luncheon meeting last week were Robert Byrnes, adminis trator of Pioneer Memorial Hospital and Carmen Djella, the new supervisor of nurses. Byrnes spoke of the need for upgrading services and reno vating facilities at the hos pital. Djella is a newcomer to the area, coming here from Min nesota with his wife and small daughter. It was reported the Sorop timist picnic sponsored for the nursing home was hugely enioved bv all and plans were discussed to make it an annual affair. The forthcoming newcom ers meeting was also discus sed. This is co-sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the South Morrow Ministerial Association and the Soroptim ists. Members were reminded of the district meeting to be held in Moses Lake, Wash., Sept. 24 and25. Rummage is still being collected and stored for the annual rummage sale Oct. 14-15. The next regular meeting of the Morrow County School Board will be held at the Lexington Office Monday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. The Board will hear pro gress reports on projects to light the high school football fields at Riverside and lone High Schools. Both of the projects involve the commun ity and local Lions Gubs. The Board will adopt a budget calendar, consider rec ommendations from the teacherage committee on ren tal increases, consider adjust ments in professional con tracts and will hear a report on the new legislation requir ing districts to hold a tax base election. The District Auditor will be present to discuss the District Audit. Swim schedule announced The Heppner Swimming Pool will close for the season at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18. Public swimming sessions remaining this year include: Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1 : 30 to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday. Sept. 18. from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Evening sessions scheduled until Tuesday, Sept. 20 have been cancelled because of high heating oil and operating costs broght on by the cool weather. A full report on finances and swimming programs will be presented to the City Council at the next public meeting. A summary report, along with information for those who took swimming lessons this year, will appear in an upcoming edition of the Gazette-Times. I J V 1 ... MINIMUM ENROLLMENT To insure that a class operates on an economical basis a minimun of 10 persons is required for a class to be offered. If a class is canceled students may transfer or have fee refunded. WHAT IS THE COST? Fees vary according to type & length of class. All tuition & fees are p&yable at the time of registration. No student is enrolled in class until all fees have been paid. Redunds are not made af ter the second class period. ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES Students are requested to preregister for all classes since many classes are limited in enrollment. To preregister, fill out the coupon below. Preregistrations must be received no later than Sept. 23 or students may register for classes at first class meeting if an opening exists. A minimum of ten students is required for each class. The purpose of the class is to give students an understanding of the cultural and physical landscapes of the state. PAINTING Introduction in the use of oil color and other painting media. BEGINNING TENNIS For persons with basic knowledge and skills in tennis who wish to improve their skills. ADVANCED CAKE DECORATING Advanced techniques of flowers and borders. The flowers are those requiring more experience and pressure control for formation on or in specially designed nails for natural contour. BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY This course is for the beginning and amatuer student of photography. Theory and laboratory procedures will be combined to develop a working knowledge of the basic prin ciples and fundamentals ot general photography. TOLE PAINTING ON CANVAS Prerequisite: Beginning Tole pain ting. BASIC SPOKEN SPANISH Beginning Spanish taught in the speaking-listening method. Emphasis on pronunciation and simple sentences. TRACLNG YOUR FAMILY TREE The beginning genealogist should become familiar with available local resources and learn methods of obtaining, recording and filing information for easier use of research data. ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA The student will study and demonstrate knowledge of fundamental concepts of algebra including sets, variables, and sentences; integers, rational numbers, and real num bers; fractional expressions and poly nominals; and solving sentences. BUSINESS MATH A study of compound interest and discount, an nuities, sinking gund and amortization, consumer credit, insurance, stocks and bonds, graphs and tables. AMERICAN NATIONAL GOVERNMENT The course will involve an examination of a version of elite theory ad its explanation of how public policy decisions affection the lives of all Americans are made. Elite theories will be contrasted with the prevailing theoretical per spective of pluralism. WRITING FOR PUBLICATION Techniques of getting articles, short stories, and poems published. Writing articles will be part of class work. How to approach publishers with manuscripts, layouts, and financial considerations. STAINED GLASS An introduction to working with stained glass using both lead came and copperfoil methods. WELDING The course introduces set-up and operation of oxyacetelene, cutting, brazing, welding; as well as flat, vertical up and vertical down arc welding. INTERMEDIATE TOLE Course will cover four areas: designing and cutting tole boards, rustic hand carving and printing, miniature pain ting and general painting. Requires some previous tole painting.
