EIGHT The Gazette-Times, Extention Events... Birdine Jan Weber, OSU Extension -Home Management Specialist coming We are excited that Jan Weber, Extension specialist will be coming to Morrow county to present a new idea in 4-H programs, as well as serve as instructor for the leader-teacher training for study group leaders. Jan will visit all the high schools in the county, where she will work with students on time management. If you are a parent of our super busy high school girls and boys, you'll understand why manag ing time is important. Jan calls her special program "the monkey on your back." She's young, and fun! We encourage all high school students to take advantage of this one time offer for help. Her schedule will take her to lone High, Monday norning, Sept. 19, to Heppner High that afternoon, and to Riverside High on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Her leader teacher training will be on "Living Better with Less," helping with ideas on conservation of energy, water, and other resources. The training will be Tuesday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. at the Baptist Church, Irrigon. Young Homemaker's Newsletter Extension has a delightful newsletter, available free to mothers of pre school age children, which is mailed out monthly to those interested. Edited by Marcelle Straat man, Extension human devel opment specialist, the attrac tive newsletter includes ar ticles of special interest to parents of young children; child care techniques, making toys and paythings, recipes, child nutrition, and other topics of seasonal interest. While the publication is not published during summer Griebs corner judging Julie Grieb of the Heppner FFA Chapter won the Western States Angus Auxiliary Award at the State Fair in Salem and along with Geri and Ken Grieb finished high in the standings in many of the beef judging categories. Julie was named champion in the Senior Bull Calf category and placed both first and second in the Junior Heifer Calf division. She was first in the Senior Heifer Calf judging and was named Jun ior Champion in the Late Junior Yearling Heifer com petition. She took the Junior Reserve Champion award in the Early Junior Yearling Heifer juding and placed both first and second in the Young Breeders Herd category. Julie topped the field with her Get of Sire, took a first in Angus Show manship and placed eighth in Beef Herdsmanship. Geri Grieb placed second in both the Late and Early Junior Yearling Heifer class and showed the Champion and Grand Champion in Angus Showmanship. Geri placed second in Beef Herdsmanship. Ken Grieb was named Senior Champion in Angus Showmanship and Placed fourth in Beef Herdsmanship. Oregon Report Youth Range Camp A report from Tom Bendell, Extension Range Resource specialist, who was in charge of the Oregon Youth Range Camp, compliments Morrow Coounty on the two delegates who attended. Debra Klaus and Melody Gochnauer, Hep pner, were among the forty two high school age girls and boys who took part this year. The camp is intended as an enriching outdoor educational experience into many phases of natural resource manage ment, and is jointly sponsored by the Society for Range Management and Oregon State University Extension Service. Scholarships for the girls were provided by Mor row County Livestock Grow ers Association and the Dis trict Soil Conservation As sociation. Bedell reports a very suc cessful camp, with coopera tive weather and youngsters. Delegates were from 17 coun ties, with 21 girls and 21 boys attending. Those interested in attend ing the camp next August might want to visit with the girls and get a first hand report of their experiences. International Many in this area will remember the men from India who spent part of the summer here about three years ago, and will be interested to know that we hear from one, P.S. Swamy, from time to time. Swamy sends his regards and great affection to all in our county. In addition, the Morrow County team of Paula, Larry Palmer, and Janet McElligott, were named the top 4-H judging team at the state event. While Paula carried home the pur ple, brother Larry came back with a blue. Three senior girls received blues on their presentations. Jan Peterson, lone, repeated her "TNT" presentation, sharing ideas and techniques on making terrific, neat, t-shirts, while Erin Evans shared her "One for All" presentation, showing a wide variety of individualized pil lows, each for a special family member or friend. Kate Evans presented . ideas ga lore on accessories which can be made inexpensively, rang ing from the popular flowered combs for a summer hair-do, to shawls and mufflers to conserve warmth and energy this winter. Two wool garments came home from state fair, not only with blue ribbons, but with Heppner FFA wins judging The Heppner FFA Chapter attended the Sherman County Fair in Moro on Sept. 8, with 36 members participating in the judging contest. Krynn Robinson, Wade West, Marie VanSchoiack, Colmen Devine and Anne VanSchoiack were on the advanced team while Brian Thompson, Tony Currin, Joe Mollahan, Pat Lovgren and Pat Clark represented Hep pner on the beginning team. When the 4-H members who qualified for the Award of Merit gold ribbons were announced late Sunday after noon of state fair, Morrow county's only 4-H livestock exhibitor was proud to step forward and take a bow.
