Page 3 Hair styling Four Heppner mill teams win lone grad ranks among experts Kinzua safety winners named Les Madden, a 13 graduate of lone High School, has made a name for himself in the hair styling world. Madden, who owns and operates Magnum Opus, "Hair cutting with thought," in Portland, was in Hermiston Sunday, giving a show and clinic at The Hair Stall. Gary Ostium, Hermiston, owner of The Hair Stall, invited Madden to give the clinic to Hermiston and Pendleton barbers and hair stylists. Madden did two styles on models for the barbering audience in the morning, then supervised cutting and styling in the afternoon. ' After attending school and graduating at lone, Madden attended Columbia Basin College in Pasco. He then worked in a styling shop in Portland for two and a half years. He opened his own shop in Portland and operated it for six years, but gave it up. He went to Europe for four months, studying hair styling, precision cutting and even competed in the European championships. He came back to Portland and organized his progressive salon, Magnum Opus, where he has operated on South West Taylor for the last three years. The salon employs nine persons. Madden's occupation doesn't keep him at home in Portland. He is constantly on the road during weekends, he said, giving clinics, teaching and going to shows. He recently attended the world champion ships in New York, where 90,000 people attended. Snyder, 79, Pen dleton, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital, Heppner. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 14, at 12:30 p.m. at Folsom-Bishop Funeral Chapel, Pendleton, with Folsom-Bishop in charge of ar rangements. Interment was at Olney Cemetery, Pendleton. Mrs. Snyder is survived by one son, Wayne, Heppner; one c. . daughter, Doris A. Lathan, ' Portland; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, five ' sisters, Mrs. Telford Bes ; singer, Hermiston; Mrs. L.W. Owen, Pendleton; Mrs. Tom Stanton, Pilot Rock; Mrs. Mary Rugg, Pilot Rock; and Mrs. Muriel O'Donel, Port : land. Mrs. Snyder spent the last six months in Heppner with her son and daughter-in-law, ? Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Snyder. Harold Mabe Funeral services were held , for Harold Random Mabe at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fossil ' , United Methodist Church. Mr. I Mabe died Jan. 4 at Pioneer . Memorial Hospital in Hep pner. ; He was born Mar. 12, 1905, at Richmond, Ore., and spent ; all of his life in Wheeler County, where he engaged in farming and carpenter work. , His wife, Ruby, died in June i 1973. ! He is survived by one ' daughter, Mildred William i son, Arlington; three sons, Marvin of Fossil Roderick and William, both of Arling Madden said to "stay up on the important things, feelings' were the biggest problem. Madden said "every line has been cut now" but different barbers and stylists have different "flair and feelings." Madden said today's styles are going to the shorter look. Interment followed at IOOF Cemetery in Fossil. Fred Payne Fred Payne, Heppner, died Tuesday here at the age of 92. He was born in London, Ken., on Apr. 23, 1884 and died Jan. 18, 1977. Mr. Payne is survived by one daughter, Marjorie Gard ner, Heppner; one grandson, LeRoy Gardner, Jr., Hermis ton; a sister, Ethel Specht, The Dalles; three brothers, Tobe and Matt, The Dalles, and Victor, Portland. Payne moved from Mitchell to Dufur in 1923. He farmed there until 1942 when he moved to The Dalles. He moved to Heppner in 1975 to live with his daughter. His wife preceded him in death on May 6, 1975. Payne was a 50 year past member of Ramsey Park Grange. Services will be held today, Jan: 20, at Spencer Libby Funeral Chapel in The Dalles at 10 a.m. He will be buried at IOOF Cemetery in The Dalles. The eleventh month of the Kinzua Corporation safety contest ended on Jan. 1. Four Kinzua and Eastern Oregon Logging teams and four teams from Kinzua's Heppner Mill ended the eleventh month with no lost time accidents, Bar bara Pike reports. As an award for working safely, each man on the eight winning teams received fifty dollars cash. In addition, each team held a drawing among their members, with the winner given a choice between a twenty-five inch color TV and a 30-o6 rifle with scope sight. Eastern Oregon Logging's winning teams were E Team with John McCullock the win ner of a 25 inch color TV; Team C's winner, Mike Todd, picked the 30-o6 rifle; Team D's winner was Ronald Prin dle, who also took the TV.
