Kinzua safety winners named
Les Madden, a 13 graduate of lone High
School, has made a name for himself in the
hair styling world.
Madden, who owns and operates Magnum
Opus, "Hair cutting with thought," in
Portland, was in Hermiston Sunday, giving a
show and clinic at The Hair Stall.
Gary Ostium, Hermiston, owner of The
Hair Stall, invited Madden to give the clinic to
Hermiston and Pendleton barbers and hair
stylists.
Madden did two styles on models for the
barbering audience in the morning, then
supervised cutting and styling in the
afternoon.
' After attending school and graduating at
lone, Madden attended Columbia Basin
College in Pasco. He then worked in a styling
shop in Portland for two and a half years.
He opened his own shop in Portland and
operated it for six years, but gave it up. He
went to Europe for four months, studying hair
styling, precision cutting and even competed
in the European championships.
He came back to Portland and organized
his progressive salon, Magnum Opus, where
he has operated on South West Taylor for the
last three years. The salon employs nine
persons.
Madden's occupation doesn't keep him at
home in Portland. He is constantly on the
road during weekends, he said, giving clinics,
teaching and going to shows.
He recently attended the world champion
ships in New York, where 90,000 people
attended.

things, feelings' were the biggest problem.
Madden said "every line has been cut now"
but different barbers and stylists have
different "flair and feelings."
Madden said today's styles are going to the
shorter look. He said the short styles add
