The theme this year was on ecology and the title was "Waste-Not". The contest was judged locally and the three place winners in each division were sent to District No. 10. Local contest winners were: Essays. 7th, 8th and 9th grade, first. Kristi Edmundson; 2nd, Tammy Shimp; Essays, 10th and 1 1th, first, Debra Palmer; poster, 5th and 6th grade, 1st, Tenna Lindstrom, 2nd, Mich ele La Hue. 3rd, Kelly Petty john; 7th, 8th and 9th grade, 1st. ONE NEWS Eva Hamlett District No. 10 winners were: essays, 7th, 8th and 9th grade, 1st, Kristi Edmundson, 2nd, Tammy Shimp; 10th and 11th. 1st, Debra Palmer; posters, 5th and 6th, 3rd Teena Lindstrom; 7th, 8th and 9th, 1st, Jan Peterson, 2nd, Kristi Edmundson, 3rd, Jeff Ed mundson; 10th and 11th, 1st, Debra Palmer, 2nd, Donna Palmer. All first place entries in District No. 10 have been sent on to the state for judging, and winners will be announced in a week or two. Mr. and Mrs. Gerry George (nee Arleta MeCabe) of Bea verton are the parents of an 8 lb. girl born June 10. The baby has been named Kristine Michelle and joins two broth ers. Micheal and Mark. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Cliff George of Portland, and Mrs. Helen MeCabe, lone. Great grandparent is Mrs. Mary Lindsay of lone. Members of the lone Garden Club spent June 11 at Ihe mountain cabin of V'ida lleli ker at the site of the old Parker's Mill. Collection of wild flowers in the area brought a prize of the book "Wildflower I" by Mrs. Kirk Horn lo Judy Osmin who collected the largest number. About forty flowers were collected and identified. Ob servance of Flag Day was held with the reading of "Just a Piece of Cloth" by Pat Petty john. Next month members will attend a tour on July U. which includes gardens in Pendleton and the Bade Ran ch in Milton Freewater. At the short business meeting it was announced that dues this year would include a subscription to the newsletter of the Oregon Federation of Garden Clubs. Mrs. Fred Martin and Mrs. H S. Huber were appointed as delegates to State Convention. Visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Nelson for the lone United Church Auc tion on June 7 were her brothers and sister of Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Elmo McMil lan returned to their home in Salem on Monday. They were accompanied by Mrs. Adon Hamlett. Mr. Hamlett met her in Vancouver, Wa at the home of their daughter. Shar lone Arends, and they return ed home on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Morgan returned home after spending a week in Montana and Yellow Stone Park with the Western Wheal Association. Mrs. Sam Crawford is back home after being in St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendle ton for a week. Guests at the home of Mr, and Mrs. Milton Morgan for Father's Day were Mrs. Keith Peck and children, Natalie and Brian of Portland, and Mr and Mrs. Gary Morgan and family of Aloha. J f i , JUNE 21 Edmundson hired as assfsfan? superintendent The Morrow County School Board hired John Edmundson as Ihe new assistant to the county school superintendent al ils Monday evening meet ing at the district office in Lexington. Edmundson has been the principal of the lone school for the past three years. The position of curriculum coordinator was vacated last July when Ernie Teale left Ihe position. Al thai time the Ixiard decided to change the position to assistant lo the superintendent rather than curriculum coordinator. Kdmundson had taught for eight years in Ihe Salem school system followed by two years in Ihe central office. During that time he also did graduate work at Boston College and Ihe University of Oregon. Edmundson went lo high school in Hood River and graduated from college at Willamette University in Salem multiple Inline plans.
