Heppner, Ore., Gazette-Times, Thursday, Jan. 2, 1975 Page 6 Gold becomes legal ; investors warned Attorney General Lee John son today urged Oregonians to use extreme caution when approached, either by phone, mail or through the media, to purchase gold or make gold investments. Beginning Dec. 31, private citizens will be able to purchase and hold gold for the first time since 1933. Johnson said the potential for fraud in this area is enormous because of the desire of people to obtain a hedge against our chronic inflation and the degree of complexities involved in ana lyzing, purchasing and dis posing of gold. He also noted the wide and rapid fluctuation of the price of gold based upon speculation rather than supply and demand. Johnson said that consum ers should investigate thoroughly before investing in gold. Be particularly suspic ious of unsolicited offers, by Hunting season dates The staff of the Oregon Wildlife Commission will recommend opening dates for major 1975 hunting seasons mostly similar to those held in 1974. according to Wildlife Division Chief Bob Mace. The commission will hold a public hearing and meeting to set the opening dates at its Portland headquarters begin ning at 10a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10 The Rocky Mountain elk season would be the only significant change, with a recommended opening date one week later than this year. Other seasons would be ad justed by one day to make them fall on Saturday. The staff recommendations would then call for an Oct. 4 opening for the general deer season, Nov. 1 for Rocky Mountain elk. and Nov. 15 for Roosevelt elk season. Antelope season would open on Aug. 16' and the early archery seasons on Aug. 23. . It should be emphasized that these are staff recommendations devel oped in consultation with field biologists, but the commission will also consider recom mendations from the public before the actual dates are set. Savings Mustangs rip Hermisfon JVs The Heppner Mustangs! finally "put it all together" Saturday night to defeat the llermislon JVs, 77-58, at the Heppner High School gym nasium. The Mustangs had some turnovers, but they managed to pass the ball effectively and were able to hit on their shots from both field and the foul line. At the end of the first period, the Mustangs led the Bulldogs 22 10, and as the half ended they had a 33-29 lead. At the end of the third period they had increased the lead over the Bulldogs by 21 points, and when the final buzzer sounded the Mustangs had won the game by 19 points, 77-58. Applications for 4 H mem bers are available at the County Extension Office, Heppner. and must be return ed by Jan 15 Twenty -one scholarships are made avail able to 4 H and FFA members in the 17 counties in Oregon serviced by Union Pacific. Ten scholarships are awarded 4 H members; FFA received nine, and two are al-large. Morrow County may submit a nominee plus one nominee alternate to the state office for consideration of the 411 scholarship.
