It looked like a Cardinal victory, but the Umapine Chiefs came alive and dominated the rest of the game. Phil Carlson collected 18 points for the Cards while Mike Maurer scored 22 for the Chiefs. The Cardinals outrebounded the Chiefs 41 to 38, but the Chiefs posted a better shooting percentage. The Blue Devils pumped in two quick jump shots and led the Mustangs 50-40 when the third quarter ended. " Going into the fourth quar ter the Mustangs pulled out all of the stops, and with slightly more than three minutes in the ball game came to within four points of the Blue Devils as John Kilkenny and Kenny Eckman added 2 points each. The Mustangs looked as though theywere going to take the lead away for the first time in the game as they were able to take the rebounds away from Condon and inter cepted their passes on the floor. Then the Mustangs ran into foul trouble. Dave Mc Lachlan fouled out with John Myers following him. With 2:01 left in the game, Condon had increased the lead to 10 points, and from then on it was the Blue Devils all the way as they passed the ball from one player to another using up the clock. That's the way the game ended; Blue Devils 76, Mus tangs 64. Mike Bergstrom, Kenny Eckman and John Kilkenny led the Heppner scoring at tack with 16 points each. They were followed by Munkers 4, Boyer 8, McLachlan and Myers 2. Herschel Lantis scored 26 points and hauled down 22 rebounds to lead the Condon Blue Devils. Other Blue Devils scorers included Shearer 4, Pattee 11, Logan 14, Pierce 8 and Eaton 11. lone girls outplay Hermislon The lone girls topped Her miston 45-42, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to win in overtime Thursday at lone. lone took the No. 1 position in the first quarter, 10-8. The girls kept on scoring and held Hermiston to only 6 points in the second period while they tallied 12. At half time, lone held a 22-14 lead. It looked as if lone was going to have it easy the rest of the way, but Hermiston rallied in the third quarter and made 15 points to Ione's 7. In the following quarter, lone held a one-point lead until the end. Hermiston took the lead and lone could only manage to tie the score 41-41 when the fourth quarter gun sounded. In the three minute over time period, it was lone all the way as the girls took the led and stay ahead of the visitors by three points. Mickey Hoskins topped lone scoring with 15 points, fol lowed by Joan McElligott 11, Barbara Palmer 8, Mary Pat McElligott 7, Sherri Wilson 2, and Janice Edwards 2. i I v n's iar i 1 f : I HeDPner'i youngest if? JVs rally io beai Condon Heppner JVs put on a fourth quarter rally and outscored the Condon JVs 23-10 for a 56-51 victory over the Blue Devils last Friday night at Heppner. The Mustangs took the first quarter lead but had to take the second position at half time, as the Blue Devils got hot and hit 14 points to Heppner's 10. The half time score was 23-21. The next quarter was a real match as Heppner was held to 12 points to Condon's 18. The action came as Heppner showed its power and hit basket after basket. They passed Blue Devils late in the fourth quarter and held the lead. Mike Mills led Heppner scoring with 14 points, fol lowed by Wilson 12, Padberg 12, Van Marter 8, West 4, McClain 4 and Peck 2. Condon's Gary Phillips pumped in 14 to lead his team in scoring. Heppner posted a piwI Rol Your ma. a cheerleader, Jodi Naffziger, 2 per cent from the field, Condon had 30 per cent. Heppner also did well at the line, 53 per cent to Condon's 50 per cent. Friday the JVs travel to Riverside to meet the Pirate JVs. The JVs host Umatilla Saturday night. After losing to Umapine the night before, the Cards were out for blood. They held the Chiefs to a 12-12 tie at the end of the first quarter of play. Umapine's shooting slacked off and the Cardinals out scored the visitors 17-10 in the second period, taking a 7 point half time lead. Going into the third period, Umapine started finding the range and narrowed Ione's lead to 3. It was in the last period that lone gave up the lead and were trailing 49-46 with less than one minute remaining in the game. ' With 44 seconds left, lone fouled Umapine. The Chiefs missed the foul shot and lone quickly grabbed the rebound and headed home. Tom Ham lett sank a basket and put lone behind by 1 point. As soon as Umapine took the ball out, lone put on the press, stole the ball and Phil Carlson hit another 2 points for the Cards putting them ahead 50-49. Umapine couldn't get the ball in their home court and Carlson stole the ball, and with only 4 seconds remaining Umapine fouled Carlson. Carlson made the final point for the Cards. Although Umapine lost they had more rebounds than the Cards and posted a better shooting percentage from the field. The Chiefs had 42 rebounds, lone had 33. From the field Umapine shot 35 per cent and lone 29 per cent. lone, however, had a better record from the tree throw line with a 44 per cent, Umapine had 28 per cent. Paul Peterson led the vic tors with 16 points, followed by Carlson 12, Warren 11, Mc Elligott 2, Kevin Gutierrez, M. Rietmann 2, Hamlett 4, Kim Gutierrez 2. "Always ready with ahelping hand" Fillies defeat Umatilla Heppner Fillies outscored the Umatilla girls every quarter to win a 37-21 victory : Thursday evening at Heppner.1 It wasn't an easy conquest ' for the Fillies. The Umatilla girls hit basket for basket in the first quarter and trailed by one at the end of the first :' quarter. The visiting team ; couldn't keep up the pace and ! managed to score only 2 points while the Fillies hit the target for 8 points. The home team led at half time 19-12. Heppner tallied a quick 8 points in the third period and 12 points in the fourth period to ' f pass Umatilla girls in the' second half. Cyde Allstott led the Hepp- ner girls with 20 points.
