I in 10 NE 1 The lonf High School Advi sory Board hat submitted a questionnaire to parent! of school children to inquire how bet to handle the problem of rising prim as it pertains to the school lunch program. The parents are asked to make a preference of four choices: l Leave the meal pries the same and lower the quality of the meals; (2) Increase the meal price a small amount (5 cents to 10 cents) and maintain the same quality of meals; 3' Increase the meal prices by a larger amount ( 15 cents to 25 cents and raise the quality of the meals; U Other suggestions The board is planning to hold the lunch program prices at the level of 23 cents per student, 30 cents per adult, and 10 cents for extra milk as long as possible However, according to John Edmund son, principal of lone Schools, it appears that the prices will have to be increased before the school year is over. At a meeting of the lone Schools Advisory Committee Oct. 4. John Edmundson reported that preliminary contacts have been made that might lead to the placement of one or two exchange students in the lone Schools. It will first be necessary to determine the amount of interest in the community for this type exchange. Any family which would be inter ested in hosting an exchange student is invited to contact Edmundson. Erin Jo is the name selected by Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Swanson of Auburn. Wn.. for their daughter born Oct. a. Grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Gar Swanson. now have 10 granddaughters and one grandson. The lone Junior High foot ball team lost a close game to Riverside Junior High Oct. 11. 6-4) Riverside scored its touch down in the second quarter, lone managed to push the ball across the goal line in the 3rd quarter but the touchdown was nullified by a penalty. The girl's volleyball team of lone High School played at Umapine Tuesday where they won one game and lost one. On Wednesday, they played Heppner and were on the losing side for all three games. The sophomore, junior, and senior classes picked up trash in the community. Kathy Holtz was in lone for the weekend visiting with her family. She is a legal secre tary for Credits Incorporated in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Charles O' Connor have returned from a 10-day trip to Alexandria. Va.. where they visited their -daughter asd son -in4aw.- Mr-. and Mrs. Doug Onyon. While in Virginia they toured Rich mond. Jamestown. Yorktown. Williamsburg. Monticello and Mt. Vernon. They also spent some time in Washington. D C. sightseeing and touring the White House. They were guests of Rep resentative AI L'llman for a visit lo the Senate chambers. The Senate was convened to take a voie on the Fonegn Aid Bill. Mr and Mrs O'Connor were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Thompson, former lone residents, now of Washington. Thompson was reared in the lone area He attended the lone High School reunion held m September. The American Legion Aux iliary will hold a potluck supper Oct 29 in the Legion hall at 6:31) p.m. The Boys and Girls Stale delegates will give their reports The public is invited to attend Beverages will be furnished The lone I'nited Church of Christ announced It is con ducting a church school class for adults. The new class will meet during the regularly scheduled church school time at the parsonage under the leadership of Mrs George Griffith and Millard French. Veteran's Day will be ob served on two different dates. The lone Schools will observe the holiday on Nov. 12 and there w ill be no school on that date. The post office will observe Oct. 22 as Veteran's Day and no mail will be received or dispatched Milton Morgan returned from a three day meeting of the Northwest Wheat Institute held in Denver. He brought granddaughter, Natalie Peck, with him from Portland She returned to her home Sunday. A visiting priest from South Africa was the speaker at St. Williams Catholic Church. Oct. 7. Father Rodney Abdo spoke on the mission work being done in his native country. The women of The Altar Society of St. Williams Church in lone served a breakfast to men of the Order of Holy Names at their regular monthly meeting Oct. 14 at St. Patricks Church in Heppner. Catechism classes for the youth of St. Williams Church in lone have started. They are held in the church building immediately following the 815 a.m. mass. Teachers are Dick McElIigott. Mrs. Charles Doherty. Mrs. Howard Crow ell. Mrs Gar Swanson and Jerry McElIigott. Father Beard of St. Wil liams Church in lone is on vacation. Serving mass Oct. 14 was Father Adams of the Holy Redeemer Church in Port land. He had as his guest a young man from South Viet nam who is studying for the priesthood. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Velt kamp and sons. Dana. Darren. Jim Cabe and Kevin McCabe were the weekend visitors of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree. at their Cecil home. Ashley McCabe, who is stay ing with his grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie McCabe. joined them for Saturday and Sun da v. her mother, Mrs. Mary Lind say. Mr. and Mrs Pettyjohn are from Portland lone High School held class meetings Monday. Each class elected a Homecoming Prin (vfss They are: Dawn Peterson, freshman; Arlyuda Aldnch. sophomore. Sherri Wilson, junior; and Doris McCabe and Jan Ekstrom. seniors. One of these girls will be selected by the Letter man's Club to be Homecoming Queen. She will be crowned during halftime at the Culver lone football game. Oct. 19 Miss Sharlene Hamlett was home over the weekend to visit with her family, Mr. and Mrs. Adon Hamlett. Mrs A! Manck and her daughters. Mrs Gene Lan caster and Laura, were visi tors in Condon Sunday. Vehicles were stopped and inspected for illegal game. There were no citations issued for illegal deer or elk. There were three arrests for illegal possession of game birds during closed season. There were two arrests for shooting off the highway. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pettyjohn were weekend visitors with Miss Alice Nichoson of San Francisco has returned to her home after spending a two week vacation with her moth er. Mrs. Edith Nichoson. The Rev. William Arthur of lone I'nited Church of Christ stated that some members of his congregation have volun teered transportation for sen ior citizens in the lone community who desire to take advantage of the Neighbor hood Center's Meals for Senior Citizens project. Anyone desiring to go to Heppner either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock for these dinners should contact him. This service is available to every one regardless of church affiliation. The Cardinal Club will sponsor a traveling food sale Oct. 26 starting at 10 a.m. Proceeds will be used for Christmas candy for the elementary school. The Port of Morrow was unable to hold its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, Oct. 11, due to lack of a quorum, according to Gar Swanson. chairman. Mrs. Louis Carlson, Phil, and Mark Rietmann were weekend visitors in Corvallis. The Highland Church Youth Choir of Portland had to cancel its visit lo the lone I'nited Church of Christ Sun day, Oct 14 The organist for the group was ill. The group will be rescheduled at a later date. The Rev. Allan Wilson, assistant minister for the Highland Church, was in lone to deliver the sermon. He and his family were overnight guests of Mr and Mrs. Milton Morgan. Mrs. Bill Rietmann, librar ian for the Topic Club, reports these are several new books in the library for both adults and children. The Topic Club supports the lone Library as its major service project. Mr. and Mrs Bryce Keene were visited by their daugh ter, Kathy, and her friend, Craig Bernier. of Portland on Oct. 6 Mr. and Mrs. Carston Brandhagen of Heppner joined the family for dinner in the evening. Willows Grange will host Visitation Night Oct. 20 with Greenfield. Rhea Creek, and Lexington Granges attending. The evening will start with potluck supper at 6:30 p.m., in the Willows Grange Hall. The regular meeting will start at 8 p.m. Lexington Grange will provide the program and Rhea Creek Grange, the dessert. Mrs. Bob Montgomery underwent surgery at Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermi sion, Oct. 10. Open house at lone School Mrs. Bob Rietmann, head elementary teacher of lone School, announced there will be an open house at the lone Elementary School, 2:30-4 p.m., on Oct. 19. The event will be in recog nition of National Education Week. It will feature an exhibit of general school w ork, such as art work, science projects, academic accom plishments, and other items of interest to parents and the public. Mrs. Rietmann said she hoped the people attending the Ione-Cu!ver football game would take advantage of the halftime period to come to the school and view the displays as well as attending after the game is concluded. Coffee will be served. .MRS. COX'S NEPHEW DIES IN FLORIDA Mrs. W.C. Cox of Heppner received word last week of the death of her nephew. Gene C. Tavlor, 56. in Port St. Lucie, Fla Mr. Taylor died Sept. 29 at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was a former resident of Roanoke, Va., and had served two tours of duty with the armed forces over seas. Buriel was at National Military Cemetery, Culpep per Va. j - I j V ' .
