THK CLIPPER Most fantastic of machines is the computerized clipper. Its automatic scanning circuit is programmed to scan 100 times across the 8 foot sheet of veneer every one tenth of an inch as the plywood travels 150 feet per minute. It clips out dark spots, cracks and imper fections and to proper size. STKAM VAT ..If the logs! the veneer pi i .. are marked for ant. they must spend some time in the steam vat. Time spent in the steam vat is regulated bv the size of d with steam softens the log to the core until everything in the vat is brought to the desired temperature. This softens the knots and prevents the log from splitting while it is in the lathe Time in the steam vat varies from 8 to 12 hours. Condensation water is car ried to the hillside w here three settling ponds have been dug. The water goes from Settling pond No.l to No. 2 to No 3. By this time all resins, bark dust and dirt will have settled out and the water would be pure enough to be returned to the creek. However to date there has been no over-flow from Settling Pond No. 1. The Mill would also have use for the water in sprinkling the cold deck if the water became available. The water comes from Kinzua's well. GREEN CHAIN Speed is the essence on the green chain. The sheets of veneer are taken from the green chain nd stacked on selected carts. These stacks are picked up by a hyster (whose driver must have eyes in the back of his head) and taken to t taken to be banded. Then it's ready for shipment by rail or truck. applies the first band of two that for shipping. i r itt t. . Tlih NM.hn ION by an electric eye determines which Mu Inn these logs will tie leHisited. Vat. Marvin Wav The log THK I.ATHK The work of the lathe, another fantastic piece of machinery, is hidden from view of the spectator. The speed of the lather is automa tically controlled. It varies with the diameter of the log to provide a constant flow of veneer. The big log rotates slowly at the start and rotates progressively faster as the diameter diminishes down to the core. The core goes by conveyor belt to the stud mill. While one log is going through the lathe, another log is in the waiting position. Irregularities on the surface of the log. puts patchy pieces of veneer on the carrying trays but as it gets into the log it comes off in block long strips of veneer. A six-det'k tray system carries the veneer to the Clipper. As one tray fills, the lathe automatically shifts the out-put to another tray. - 8-foot veneer spots, cracks bundles the r b - X ' I p ..... j .. : In imt i IIEI'PNER, (OHE.) They enjoy ed one day at the coast but suffered through the 100 degree weather that Albany had while they were there. HAS SURGERY Mattie Green underwent major surgery last week in Pendleton. She is out of the hospital and is at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs Joe Green in Pendleton. She is getting along very well. School champion. Kevin John son came out on Black Jack. This horse appeared to stop in mid-air and with all four feet off the ground shook the dirt from his feet and then pitched the rider. He laid for awhile apparently having had the air knocked from him. On a reride he scored 33. Others listed on the Sunday show were Merlin Cassens and Mike Grant with NT. -aasssi
