'Where's fhe action?-- Af SoroptimisJs' area meeting Saturday' SIX CLUBS HERE LEAD THE ACTION Six Soroptimist Clubs of Northeastern Oregon are holding a one day netting in Heppner on May 13. Wo men from Ontario, Baker, wallowa County, LaCrande, Pendleton and Heppner will hear reports of tlie Pegion al Conference held in Great falls, Montana, April 28-30. They will discuss the fed eration's " Lead The Action" prof-ram. Anong important officials exacted are Mrs. Dorothy L. Kerry. Portland, regional Governor -Elect and Mrs. Alice E. Rasmussen, Hood iuver, Regional Treasurer, recently re-elected. Several officers from Districts II and III are also expected. The Northwestern Region Com prises the states ofOregon, Washington, Montana, Alaska and the Idaho Panhandle. The area clubs are all giv ing special attention to spe cific phases of Soroptimist goals set forth in the "Lead The Action" programandare hoping to accomplish 12 of the 15 qualifications to gain Lead The Action status. GEORGE was born in Heppner and lived in Condon and Portland, Ore gon, and San Francisco, Cal ifornia, besides Heppner. Legal Secretary by training and experience and Motion Picture Theater operator by inheritance. Elected to City Hall with first term start ing Jan 1, 1965. Mother of two sons: Kit and Shirley live in Heppner and have a boy, Cam, and a girl, Kim. David and Marcia live in Heniet, Calif., and have two boys, Sean and Corey, and a girl, Tonya. in addition to being City Recorder, Mjnicipal Judge and Utilities Clerk at City Hall, Elaine is also Secretary-Treasurer of Heppner Cemetery Maintenance Dis trict. She has served as club president inl949-50and 1968 69. She is one of Heppner's. best known club members and is presently a board member. All Noon Luncheons. Board, fourth Thursday, First National Bank Conference Room. HISTORY: Soroptimist Club of Hep pner was chartered Apr. 10, 1948, sponsored by Soropti mist Club of Baker. Among its early projects were cir culating the petitions to get the Heppner Cemetery Main tenance District on the bal lot and working for estab lishment of the City Park, both of which are now suc cessful sources ofpride. One Soroptimist serves on the Ce metery Board and the City operates the park. SERVICE PROJECTS: They participate in the So roptimist Citizenship Award, giving prizes for first and second winners; $100.00 to a high school senior girl for Academic matriculation and $50.00 for Vocational -Technical, a $25 bond to anEighth Grade Girl for Good Citi zenship, to be used as she wishes. Soroptimist timist Club of Heppner spon sors a Blue Bird Troop. On, May 19th, Heppner Soropti mists will be hostessing a luncheon for all the Senior Girls of Morrow County High Schools at which Mary Jo (Stewart) Hall, a graduate of Heppner High School, will be the speaker. Mrs. Hall is with the Board of Higher Education, and will bring per tinent information and ans wers to questions for these young ladies who will be entering college soon. Soroptimists have had various projects for assis tance at the Pioneer Memor ial Hospital, one of the most rewarding being Operation Hair-do, and the Valentine Party for patients in the Nurs ing Home. Primary fund raising acti vities are the Country Store at the Morrow County Fair and the Turkey Hop at Thanks giving with food sales and smaller ways & Means pro jects throughout the year. Soroptimists of Heppner are especially delighted to be able to hostess the Second Area Meeting of Northwest Area Meeting of Northeast Oregon.
