introducing. ...The Soroptimist Club of LaGrande HEPPNER, (ORE-), GAZETTE-TIMES, ThuroUy. May U. 19T2 Heppner Soroptimist help send Girls States MEETINGS; Noon Luncheon, first and second Thursdays, Fongi Cafe. HISTORY Soroptimist Club of La Grande was chartered In Oct 1941, by tbe Soroptimist Club of Baker. Tbrt were 21 members, with NelleCrlm mttt as their first Presi dent. SERVICE PROJECTS: Bautifying toe parks, improving the swimming po ol, providing banging bask ets of flowers for Main Stre et, spearheading tbe drive to send the Symphony Orches tra to Europe. More recent ly they have provided a full scholarship to E.O.C. to a student from Africa and a scholarship to tbe Alcohol I Drug Seminar In Salt Lake City, a sizeable donation to Meadowood Springs Speech Camp and Salvation Army Summer Camp. A major gift as $1,000.00 to Grande Ronde Hospital for a heart monitor but tbey also gave $300.00 to the City for bench es and plantings in a corner of a downtown parking lot aad $600.00 to Union County Boys' Farm. Tbey assist other civic organizations in various projects and ring bells for tbe Salvation Army Kettle at Christmas time. LaGrande Club was a Jubi lee Club, their organization of the Pendleton Club being a major step in making this - possible. Soroptimist Inter national Association celebra ted its 50th year in 1971 and those Clubs qualifying for Ju bilee Status peformed nu merous projects and accom plishments inaddition to their regular programs of service and Soroptimist activity. Funds are raised by Sorop timist Club of LaGrande thru Annual Pancake Breakfast, Annual Buffet, Garage and Rummage Sales, Raffles. JO ANNE PETTYJOHN is a native of Morrow' County as is her mother. Jo is the daughter of Mrs. JohnGraves and the late Mr. Graves. While she was in high school, she was a princess of the Mor row County Fair and Rodeo Court. She graduated from Heppner High School as sa lutatorian of her class. She was in 4-H for 10 years and had her snare of winning. When she attended SOC, she played with the traveling band. She is married to Howard Pettyjohn and they own Pet tyjohn's Farm and Building Supply. Before tbey bought the business, Jo worked at the Gazette Times. Their children are: Steve who will graduate from Or egon State this spring, Larry, a junior at OSU and Dee Ann, a freshman at SOC. Jo shares her husband's en thusiasm for hunting, both deer and elk, and she likes to bonl. They are sports fane and continue to follow athletic events at Heppner Hifeh School, even though their children are no longer In school there. LaGrande Soroptimlsts baved an occasional social night with potluck dinner and an evening of "Snow I Tell". 1971-72 OFrlCERS: President Leola Miller, Vice-president Jeana Mae Nice, Treasurer - Sarah Stein, Recording Secre tary Marian Brogolttl. Cor responding Secretary - All dean fccMaster, Immediate Past President - Jackie Will mirth. CLARA GERTSON Joined the Heppner Soroptimist Club just a few months after it was chartered. She served as its third president. She came to Inorrow County in 1901. She served as Morrow County Welfare administra tor for 19 years. She traveled extensively as State Director of tbe Degree of Honor Protective Society. She went all over tbe state giving instruction and ins tall officers. Recently she gave up some traveling to become director for Eastern Oregon, ing to become director for Eastern Oregon. She has two daughters. One daughter who lives in Port land is employed by the Port of Portland. Her other daugh ter lives at Central Point where she is a substitute teacher. Clara likes to work in ber garden, vegetable and flower. She does fancy work with needlepoint, a favorite. MARLENE CRAY was born in Heppner on Dec. 29, 1942. Her mother Jessie Griffin came to Marrow County from Missouri as a 3 year-old; her father PhEliph Griffin came here from Iowa. Mar lene married MikeGray, Hep pner, on June 10, 1961, and they have Susan Lee 9, Ar- vsf&stm times. While the Girls State pro gram is sponsored by the American Auiillary, the Hep pner Soroptimlsts assist fi nancially by sending one of the delegates. This year's Girls State de legates are LuAnn Kelly and Tami Meador. Tami is tbe daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Meador. One of the highlights of ber Junior year has been parti cipating in plays at Heppner DAISY COLLINS, the budget expert of heppner Club, has completed 25 years as co owner of Heppner Cleaners this month. She and the other co-owner, Heppner"s Mayor, Bill Collins, bought tbe busi ness in 1947 and have been very active bere ever sine. Tbey have four daughters: Judith (Mrs. David Tat tleben). Harrlsburg, who has two sons, David 7 and Brian 4; Jeanne, Alameda, Calif., who works for Fredons and travels with a field group that sells and Installs compu ters. Daughter Patricia married Don Palsten last month tbey are both teach ing in the Soap Lake, Wash, schools; daughter Lisa Is a Freshman at Heppner High School. Daisy has, in ber 20 years of membership, been recording secretary, vice pres. twice, and president (1954-55). lene May 7, and Terry Gene 21. They own tbe Union '76 station under the name of Gray's Repair Shop. Marlene does the books, helps at the station when needed, and also "tries to put my 2 cents in when advice is needed". Marlene has been great on club committees and is pres ently vice-president and Ser vice Objectives and Youth Committee chairman. Her attractive home has been the scene of delightful social Thank You for Coming IaOur Area Meeting irrr 3 TTT JO PETTYJOHN Co-owner Pettyjohn's Farm and Builders Supply "The Home of Glidden Paints" High School. She wasa mem ber of the cast of "Bull In the China Shop" and was as sistant director of "Rumpel Stiltskin". Rumpel Stiltskln had a second showing recent ly for grades one to four. Director Tami said "They were real good listeners". Tami with Diane Cox al ternates on a shift as recep tionist at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Tbeir hours are from 4 until 8 after school and noon until . on Sat. and Sun. Tami plays tbe piano and Is still taking piano lessons. She is a member of National Honor Society, Pep Club, Drama Club and is ASB trea surer. Hobby wise she likes to hunt and fish with ber dad and loves to cook. She is eagerly looking for ward to attending GlrlsState. LuAnn Kelly LuAnn Kelly Is the other Girls State delegate. She Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kelly. While being editor of the Hehisch, the school paper, has kept her extremely busy, she has liked it. She especially liked the organization that was requir ed. Oregon State beckons but ber choice of schools w ill depend as she says" How I do in Biology but I kinda like Journalism too". She too Is a member of National Honor Society and Pep Club. She plays the piano well enough for ber plays golf and water skis. A square peg won't fit Into a round bole, but a square deal fits anynwere. HELLO EVERYONE- We're so glad you could come!
