HISTORY: Sponsored by Soroptimist Club of Portland. the Soroptimist Club of Bak er was chartered June 14. 1W0. The first President (who was to become a Re gional Director, now called Regional Governor) was Etta Cunning and is at the pre sent time, along with char ter members Zella Smurth wane, Etna Langrell and Flo rence eis, a Life Member of Baker Club. Francis Oli ver, also a charter member, is now an Honorary Mem ber. This Club sponsored the LaGrande. Ontario and Hep pner Soroptimist Clubs, pner Soroptimist Clubs. Membership at the present time is forty active mem bers, one associate member, fifteen life members, three sustaining members and three honorary members. SERWCE PROJECTS: During the current year Baker Club has provided tunas lor two ne tana uni- EVELYN SWEEK, dietary supervisor at Heppner s Pio neer Memorial Hospital the past 12 years, was born in Portland of Polish parents. She lived in Newberg until 1948 when the family moved to Monument where Evelyn finished the last two years of high school. She is married to Clayton Sweek whose fam ily were longtime pioneers in the Long Creek-Hamilton area. Her children are Mike 17, Dana 16, Curtis 12 and Sheridan 7. Evelyn is a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Juvenile Advisory Board, and has just returned from her first Soroptimist Regional Conference. They will also sponsor a Leading Cituens Dinner honoring 5 Cowbelle Mem bers who nude a movie that has been shown all over the United States. Together with the three men's service clubs of Baker, Soroptimists are sponsoring an education panel on VD with a doctor, minister, pharmicist, and 2 school counsellors on the pa nel. Educational projects in clude a $430.00 Scholarship to E.O.C. and $50.00 to A. F.S. ways and Means for financ ing their service projects are Pearls 'n fun 'n Fancy, an annual card party with demon stration of crocheting with pearls - Kountry Kitchen -Bingo Party - Candy Sale -Patio and Yard Sale. SYLVIA McDANIEL. whose classification is County Gov ernment, Morrow County Treasurer, joined th Hep pner Club in 1962. She has held the office of club treasur- ' er for four years at two different times and has also served as corresponding sec retary and historian. Sylvia is presently running for re election to her fifth term as county treasurer. She has lived in Heppner since 1944 and has been active in Meth odist Church and community affairs. Sylvia is listed in "Who's Who of American Wo men". She has served as club president twice in 1955-56 and in 1961-62. For some years she has baked sujier Birtiiday Cakes for members' monthly birthdays. Eleanor and Ed Gonty have four children: a married son who redides in Seattle and who has four children and a married daughter in Ukiah who has two children. Two boys are stai at home. After Mr. Sowartfs surgery and after effects, when he was un able to continue active work in the fall of 1955, Alice went to work. She worked in the Assessor's office for Vi years, worked at the First National Bank for 3 years, and began working for Far ley Motors in Jan. 1960. Alice and Earl Soward have 3 child ren and 9 grandchildren. The two sons are in the insurance business and their daughter is married to a Christian minister and is living in Hutchinson, Kansas. Alice's hobbies are needlework, gar dening and raising beautiful orchids. Alice is correspond ing secretary this year. Alice Soward office manager 1 '-Ft- ' - . ft
