SEWER SINKING FUND SUMMARY FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1970-1971, BEGINNING JULY 1, 1970 Boardman News There were eight tables of pi nochle and two of bridge in play at the card party held last Thursday at Greenfield Grange Hall, sponsored by the Altar So ciety of St. Patrick's Church. The ff.nr was a benefit for purch asing carpeting for the church. High prize in pinochle was won by Mrs. Louise Weeks of Her miston, and low went to Mamie Reser of Hermiston. Mrs. Steve Wilkie was chair man in charge, and assisting with the refreshments were Mrs. Vern Evans of Irrigon, Mrs. Dan te Daltoso and Mrs. Delmer Hug. 1961-65 Reunion The graduating classes of 1961 through 1965 held open house at Riverside High School Saturday fternoon with about twenty at tending with their families. In charge were Mrs. Jim Barriek, Mrs. Rod Flug and Mrs. Frank Bates. Mrs resident of Boardman, leaving here in 1956 after living here for 37 years. She was born in Onemee, Ontario, Canada, July 18, 1888, the daughter of Robert G. and Margaret Clark Shaw. She spent her early life there and was married to Samuel B. Richardson at Alameda, Canada March 29, 1905. They moved to Eugene in 1908, living there until 1919 when they moved to Boardman. Mr. Richardson pre ceded her in death and she was then married to Harry Jayne, who also died. Mio later was married to Fred A. Hooper at Walla Walla, Wash., Aug. 20, 1916 and they continued to live in Boardman until 195b when they moved to Gaston, Mr. Hoop er died in 19W). The Rov. John E. Moore. tor of the Highland Avenue list Church in Hermiston ducted the services. Mrs Hawk and daughters Cindy and Cathy of Hermiston sang "Won derful Peace" and "Rock of Ag es.'" Mrs. LaVern Partlow sang "There's No Disappointment In Heaven.'" Mrs. Lowell Shattuck of Stanfield was organist. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Marion (Bartie) Quayle of Hillsboro and Mrs. Clifford (Freeda) Christopherson of Gas ton; a brother, Henry Shaw of Boseman, Manitoba; five grand children and eight great-grandchildren. Two daughters, Pearl and Edith, preceded her in death. Mrs. Hooper was a mem ber of the Baptist Church and a member of the Gaston Grange, having been a granger for many years, first joining Greenfield Grange in Boardman in 1920. M. N. Kirk Passes Services were held for Merle N. Kirk of Hermiston nt the Heppner Chapel, May 29. He passed away soon after being admitted to the hospital follow ing a heart attack. He was born Oct. 11, 1892 to Stokes and Elma Kirk near Hamilton, Mont. When a young lad the family moved to Ukiah, where they operated a store. La ter they moved to Echo where Merle and sister Helen attended school and the family continued in the grocery . business. When his parents moved to Lyle, Wn., Merle, his sister and brother-in-law the Roy Tylers, took over operation of the Bell ranch in the Blackhorse section of Mor row County. Merle's grandfather, W. W. Kirk, was a pioneer land owner in thus area. Merle and Altha Devin were married in the fall of 1916 and farmed the Hunt wheat land in Clark's Canyon. They purchased the adjacent wheat land and built their home on what is presently the Paul Jones ranch. In 1953 the Kirks retired from ranching and moved to Hermis ton keeping the Devin place in Sandhollow. This place is known as the Kirk and Robinson ranch, where a purebred cattle Hooper was a long time ' -'" In 1947 he became a member of the Lexington Grange and up on moving to Hermiston demit ted to Columbia Grange No. 8G7 in Hermiston He was also a vet eran member of the Elks Club of Heppner. A life long lover of the out doors, Merle spent much of his leisure time pursuing his hob hies of hunting and fishing. His great love of these sports took him on excursions from Florida to Alaska. Besides his wife Altha, lie leaves: two daughters, Mrs. Don (Merlyn) Robinson of Heppner, Mrs. James R. (Evelyn) Broun of Pendleton, and a sister Mrs. Roy (Helen) Tyler of Lebanon, Ore. A "good job plaque" was awarded to Bob Harris of Hepp ner, a junior in general studies majoring in social science. Bob was sports editor of the news paper and sports information director for the college. He will become sports editor of the Ba ker Democrat-Herald this month. Mrs. Josephine Buchanan is visiting her sister, Ada Mon tague in Toppenish, Wash., whose husband Bob Montague died last week. Mr. and Mrs. Al Partlow drove to Portland Saturday, and at tended an inter-denominational church convention, of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellow ship International, at the Sher aton Inn Hotel. While in Port land they visited Mrs. Partlow's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Berg and Ron, Mr. and Mrs. Russcl McCoy, Vancouver, Wash., Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Mrs. Part- low spoke at the meeting or the Women's Missionary Coun cil. First Visit Mr. and Mrs. James Wilson and Infant daughter Randl Rene', visited at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chest er Wilson on Saturday. This was the first visit to her grandpar ents home for Randl Rene' who was born May 22, weight, 8 lb., 3'i oz. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dilford Mills of Hermiston. Mayor and Mrs. Chester Wil son and Larry picnicked at Mc Nary Park on Saturday, with their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson, Tommy and Jere, of Boise, Idaho, who were weekend guests Joe Wilson and Lois Land, brother and sister of Chester Wilson, were overnight guests at his home May 23. Holds Lion's Aux. Office Mrs. Ernest Jorgensen was elected District Director of the Lion's Auxiliary at the Lion's Convention in Salem in late May. Those attending the con vention from Irrigon were, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jorgensen and Mr. and Mrs. James McRae. Recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Kenney were Mark Buchanan and Dan of Se attle. Mr. Buchanan has been with the Merchant Marines for many years. Ho recently return ed from Beirut, then made a tour in Canada. Memorial Day Doings Clara Fay Coy, of Portland, spent the Memorial Day week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Coy. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Coy, Starla, Revel!, and Ryan of Hermiston, called on his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Coy on Thursday, be fore leaving for a Vigil family reunion in Wyoming, Memorial Day weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Howton of lone, visited with the E. A. Stephens on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Berg and Ronald spent the Memorial Day weekend with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Al Partlow and Sheryl. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Stephens accompanied their son Clarke and family to Arlington on Memorial Day. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ford re turned Friday from Cathlamct, Wash., where they attended the high school graduation of their son Larry. The Ford family mov ed here from Cathlamct last July. At Smouse Home Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smouse of lone had a family Memorial Day weekend. Coming were Mrs. Henry V. Smouse of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Orlo Martin of Moro and their granddaughters Wendy and Vicky Martin of Kent, Mrs. Richard K. Baker, Deborah, Martha, Elizabeth and Richard, all of Corvallis. Carl Troedson stopped by in the afternoon to visit with them. The three children of Judge and Mrs. Paul Jones spent the Memorial Day week-end with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Jon Blake (Sandra) and Shawn ar rived Thursday, from their homo in Renton; Ray came home from BMCC Friday and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Jones and two children of Hood River came on Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Bunch had their three children all at home over (he weekend for the first time in nearly eight years. Mike has recently been discharged from the army and flew to Port land where he met Sherron Brenner and they came home to gether. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Bunch and children came over from Kennewick.
