Aide, attended a training session in Moro given by Specialists Joe Caplzzi, Andy Dimlforee and Cal Monroe on all 4 II Natural Science clubs. In an effort to Interest more bnvs In rlnh work, manv new and different club programs are being oliered eacn year. New materials and ideas on the Outdoorsman club, Entomol ogy. Wildlife, Geology, Beekeep ing, Forestry, Archery, Fisher man and Gun Safety were pre Rented. The Outdoorsman club en courages vounc DcoDle to ob serve the many wonders of our natural habitat, and at the same time learn conservation and un derstand the sciences in relation to their future lives. The Geology and Entomology clubs offer training and infor mation to boys and girls that is readily usable in school sci ence classes. The proven 4-H ideas of learning by doing ap plies to all the science clubs. All of these clubs are intend ed to get young people out of doors, Improve their knowledge, health, and physical fitness. Many natural science clubs are also perfect examples of the shorter term 4-H project. For in stance, it would be passible to complete a years' 4-H Entomol ogy program during spring and summer when "bugs" are abun dant Do you share this curiosity and wonder? Defensive Driving Draws Twenty-six Twenty-six Morrow County men and women will be "driv inc defensively" as thev are learning the techniques of safe driving on our nignways toaay in the Home Extension Advisory Committee course now under way in Heppner. Interest was great in the course and some in terested people had to be ex cluded due to limitation of class number according to Birdine Tullis, extension aide. Dorris Graves, chairman of the Home Extension Advisory com mittee has been in charge of ar rangements to provide the safe ty class to Morrow County driv ers. Classes will be repeated in Boardman and Heppner area in the fall. Bud Salisbury and Jerry Weitzel, Forest Service personnel from Pendleton arc instructorss for the classes of the 8 hour course; enrollees will receive a certificate. Doug Beggs won four first place rib bons at the Prairie City Invi tational Track Meet Friday night. Beggs picked up first nlre ribbons In the 100 yard dash, the 220 yard dash, the long jump, and the high Jump. Joe MrFlllirott nicked ud a fourth place ribbon in the long Jump and a fifth place in the zaj yara dash. Rick Barnett and Gene Crowell also represented lone in this track meet. These same boys represented lone on Satur day at the Arlington Invitation al Track Meet where Beggs gar nered second place ribbons in the 100 yard dash, the 220 yard dash, and the long jump. Th Tone Hi eh School Eirls' track team participated in the sub. district track meet at Wal lowa Saturday. Team members were Jackie Howton, Melissa McElligott, Anne Hoskins, San di Carlson, Karen Crowell, and Nancy Ashurst. Jackie Howton won second place in the high Jump. She will represent IHS in the district track meet at The Dalles on Saturday, May 9. May Topics Set For Home Extension By MOLLY SAUL "Financial Planning for Re tirement" will be the subject of study lessons for all Home Ex tension units in Umatilla and Morrow Counties for May. The purpose of this lesson is to en courage families to plan for their own future financial sec urity and to create an aware ness of the importance of per iodic savings. Homemakers will become informed on where to get information about savings and investment alternatives. The lesson is especially geared to young couples, but information is included for all age groups. Wheeler County nabbed top hon ors firing a 2115, wiih Heppner following with a 2J7. Umatilla was third with 302 and Grant Union finished last with 333. John Wall from Wheeler har nessed medalist honors with a one over par 61. Pat Kilkenny from the host team was second Library Week Heppner High's library under went a major change recently when new shelving was install ed on the back wall. Also, post ers were displayed to promote National Library Week. Shelving that had previously been used In one of the other schools in the county, then stor ed at the school district office, was installed to ease present shelf loads. Space for tables which was cut down somewhat will not change the number of students who can use the cen ter. Eye catching posters at the school and downtown Heppner promoted National Library Week. They were the results of a suggestion made by the li brary science students. The post ers were designed by Jana Lee Scott and art instructor Tom Shear helped with the silk screening. Mrs. Madge Thomson, librar ian, says, "I would like to thank my library science students, boys who helped transfer books, and the students of HHS for their cooperation while the library was in a general state of chaos."
