July 17. 1969 Plans Underway To Make Annual Fair Big Event By BIRDINE TVLUS County Extension Aid In preparation for the 411 events at the County Fair, Aug ust 19-21. this column will be used to remind members and leaders of various things of con rem. Manv plans are underway at present to make for a pleasant and eventful fair for an con cerned with the 411 program. Home Ec Entry Form All 4 11 home economic mem bers will be receiving entry let ters for the various events at County Fair this week. Due date for these pre reglstratlon entry forms to be returned to the County office Is August 6. If any member should fail to receive a form he .should call the office at once. The eurly return of en try forms will simplify work to be done In preparation for the many events. tlon Is a prepared presentation Fair will be the 4 -II Horse Show Demonstration Now is the time for 4 II mem bers to prepare and practice demonstrations to be given at the County Fair! An ciieci ive demonstration is one where someone in the audience can, after viewing the demonstra lion, actually perform the task demonstrated. Demonstratons are an Import ant way in which 4 11 encourag es urowth of poise, and confi dence In members. Because 4 11 is learning by doing, there are unlimited potential demonstra tion topics in all phases of 4 II work. The demonstration topic should be specific. Some sug gested demonstration lists are available in the extension of- flee, or from leaders to help the member In selecting a topic. Members will need to no re search on their selected topic and practice giving their dem onstration to their family and o their 4 II club. The most ef fective demonstrations are those presented with poise, dexterity and sincerity. All of these fac tors come from practice! Horse Show on August 10 First 4-H event of the County on Sunday, August 10. This Is the event where horse club members t.how what they have learned In their 411 year while they compete for honors In horsemanship and showman ship. Superintendents In charge of the event this year are lead ers Charley Daly and Floyd Jones. Manv new Ideas will be used In the horse show this year. Due to the laree enrollment and new classes, the show Is planned to be an all day event. New this year will be classes for mem ber trained colts on halter, and under saddle. Another new fea ture this year will be the use of score cards by the Judges for each individual member. Score cards will be given the mem bers and will be useful for ref erence to areas where improve ment is needed both in horse manship and showmanship. Members are encouraged now to refer to the county fair pre mium book for 4-H horse show rules and events, and to spend extra time with their horses in preparation for the show. Mrs. James Lindsay is supervising this year's community booths. Exhibits are own to any or ganization, school, club, grange and farm. The exhibit shall tell a story of the community or the work the organization is doing. Local products of homes, garden and farm should be used. Any organization in the county Is eligible to enter and booths will be judged on the following score: 1. Story It tells and effective ness in telline important story of the community. (Marketable products, specialty of the com munity, or the features of com munity living, etc.) a. Importance to community 30 points; b. effectiveness of the booth must present center of Interest, simplicity, balance, col or 10 points. 2. Quality of product 20 points. 3. Originality 10 points. I Booths may be worked on Monday. August IS, and must be in place and cleaned up bv 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 19, as they will be judged at 8:00 a.m.. Wednesday, August 20. Center aisle booths may not go to ceiling because of ventila Hon. Each booth, other than com mercial. will be awarded a $10 premium to help defray cost of display, regardless of placing when judged. Booths are six feet deep and entry fees are payable in advance of the exhibit. Booths will be judged on basis of qual ity, attractiveness, and arrange ment. The commercial booths re ceive ribbons. At this time almost all of the space has been reserved for the following persons or organiza tions: BOOTHS Heppner Mother's Club, Irrigon 4-H Community Club, Irrigon Kxtenson Unit. At this writing, there are on two regular booths lett. so if any organization or individ ual wishes to reserve one of these booths or other space, please call the fair secretary and space will be reserved (NOTE: We do not automatic ally reserve booths for any per son or organization from year to year, so reservations must be made during current years' fair. It s always first calls for res ervations first served!!) A supply closet of Items to be loaned for use In the sick room Is maintained for those in need of such equipment in the home, according to a reminder from the Morrow County Health Department. This service has been made possible by gener ous contributions of equipment from various interested organi zations and persons, and through the cooperation of the I Morrow County Court. Included are such articles as wheel chairs, walkers, cots and I ? te-i mattresses, commodes, bed pans, and an Invalid cushion. Morrow county organizations which have made such contri butions include the American Legion, Red Cross, Elks Lodge. Shriners, and the Heppner Civ ic League. Many individuals have also contributed useful It ems. Those interested In the use of such equipment can obtain fur ther information from the Mor row County Clerk's office, the Health Department, or from Pari E. Les sons were given July 1 through 12 by McLeod and Mrs. Jack- lyn Wagjenblast, lifeguards at the pool. Qualifying as "swimmers" were Lisa Collins, Kim Cutsforth and Allen Burkenbine. Completing the "intermedi ate" requirements were Jimmy Boyce, Mary Huson, Kathy Ken ny and Bruce Young. The "advanced beginners" in clude Terri Rogers, Cindy Rog ers, Dale Holland, Bill Kenny, Barbara Devine, Don McEwen and Kraig Cutsforth. Those completing the "begin ners" class were Craig Robin son, Daniel Van Schoiack, Con nie Burkenbine, Jackie Gentry, use in developing nations around the world are invited to tp.ke the Peace Corps Placement Test at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Julv 19 at Portland, 2022 Post Office Building, 715 N. W. Hoyt. The Peace Corps uses the Placement Test to determine how an applicant can best be utilized overseas. The test meas ures general aptitude and the ability to learn a language, not education or achievement. The te.'t requires no preparation and is non-competitive; an applicant can neither pass nor fail. Persons interested in serving with the Peace Corps must fill out an application, if they have not already done so, and pre sent it to the tester before the test. Application forms are avail able from post offices or from the Peace Corps in Washington, D. C. 20525. Fifteen thousand volunteers are currently serving in Asia, Africa, Latin Amerca and the Pacific Islands, working with the people of those nations in self-help projects ranging from food production to health to ed ucation.
