Velma Seat, Oregon State University Extension food marketing sue- cialist, gave us some interesting lacts worth thinking about. Twenty years aco food took 25 cents out of each take-home dollar; now it's down to about 17 cents. There is also a greater variety of foods from which to choose. Foods today are higher in quality because of research. better refrigeration, faster tran sportation and government in spectlon. Mrs. Seat also points out that a growing family means a growing food bill. The consum er expects . the supermarket to stay open longer hours, provide parking lot. and to cash checks. All this adds to the cost of doing business. To check what you are spend ing for food against the aver age for other western families, ask your county extension office for a free bulletin, "Your Week ly Food Bill." uld laundry detergent. PONTIAC BUICK JEEP RAMBLER GMC TRUCKS May and Chase, Heppner Phone 676-9116 Wildlife Programs Set for Campers Learning about wildlife will be one of the highlights for youngsters this summer when Game Commission naturalists visit youth camps throughout the state, with this popular pro gram getting underway last week. In cooperation with organized camping groups, the Game Com mission's wildlife program, now in its 19th year, is designed to teach boys and girls the basic principles of fish and wildlife and other natural resource con servation. Cliff Hamilton, education agent for the commission, as sisted by six wildlife natural ists, will make more than 200 visits of from one to several days duration at 60 different youth camps. Naturalists in clude Tony Faast of Albany, Gordon Lind of Corvallis, Bob LaFlamme of Corvallis, Tom Cushman of Corvallis, all four majoring in fish and wildlife management; Dan Ferguson of Eugene, who is maloring in out door recreation at OSU; and Mike Gehrman of Springfield, a resource teacher at the Seth Lewelling School in Milwaukie Nearly every organizational camp in the state has request ed the educational service this year. The list includes 4-H, Boy Scout, Girl Scout, Camp Fire Girl, denominatio n a 1, and YMCA. The wildlife instructors will lead discussions on wildlife and conduct hikes and field trips so the young campers can observe wildlife in natural surroundings, They will also assist youngsters in identifying trees and shrubs, flowering plants, birds, fish, and other plant and animal life found or observed on the tours. Animal pelts, mounted birds, and other specimens will be us ed as visual aids. Is frost accumulating around the inside edge of your freezer near the door seal? The seal may not be properly seated and is allowing warm, moisture-laden air to get inside. As the warm air is cooled, the mois ture "rains" out and freezes. To remedy the situation, you may need a new door gasket. Or perhaps using several lay ers of masking tape to properly seat the seal will turn the trick. Also, if you're in the habit of putting your warm foods in the refrigerator, this may be your problem. Avoid storing un covered liquids or foods contain ing a lot of moisture. Tired of polishing silver? Use one of the tarnish-preventive polishes. These both clean and leave a film behind to delay tarnishing in the future. With these polishes, you need to rub longer than with others to be sure to effectively bond the film to the silver. These polishes can't prevent tarnish Indefinitely, but they do tlow it down. They work best on lightly tarnished silver. If a piece is heavily tarnished, clean it with a regular silver cleaner first Then use the tarnish-preventive polish. Picnics, outdoor play and other summer fun multiply the chances of stains on kids' clothes. Be prepared with stain removers because the key word for success is "speed." The quicker a stain Is treated, the better. A dry cleaning fluid or spot remover Is helpful for grease, chewing gum and lipstick. An absorbent, such as French chalk, talcum powder or cornstarch is also effective on fresh greasy or moist stains.
