Htppner' track team took sixth place in the big Mac Hi Carn ival of Speed last Friday. Another Morrow county cin derman. Sophomore Frank Halv orsen of lone, came up with a fine performance in the high jump. His 5'11V leap gave him a tie for first in the event. The Mustangs' 15 points put them bel::nd Baker, (which won in a close team battle by tally ing 3m points,) Pendleton (33), Mac Hi Ol'-s), La Grande (22), and Des&les of Walla Walla (201): but placed them ahead of such larger schools as Herm iston and Walla Walla. Smith clocked a swift 10:15.9 in winning the two-mile, his bfst of this year and third all time fastest. Hall skimmed the lows in 14.2 and added a fourth- ace broad jump with a leap or 19.8". The discus finals show ed Wagenblast heaving the plate 135'8 3 4", which was only 6 V short of the winning toss. Another outstanding mark posted by the Horsemen was their 1:38 half-mile relay. This equalled the HHS school stand ard, although the Mustangs did not place in the event. The re lay was composed of Dean Kin dle, Bill McLeod, Jim Jacobs, and Dave Hall. Several other Mustangs, al though not placing, nevertheless c; me un with promising efforts. Bili McLeod toured the S80 course in 2:07.5. barely being edged out for fifth place. Prom ising Bui Wolff, only a fresh man, ran his first mile in 5 min utes and 16 seconds, while an other rookie, Dave Wright, sprinted the quarter-mile in 58.6. Jim Jacobs was timed at 57- fiat in the 440, while Dean Kindle finished out of the money in the low hurdles, al though clocking a 14.7. Other marks posted included McLeod s 5'G" hign jump, Dean Kindle's 13'10" broad jump, and Steve Baker's 10-foot pole vault. Heppner High's baseball team took its league opener on the chin against Wahtonka Satur day, 3-1, but came right back to square the doubleheader as Den nis O'Donnell struck out 16 in the second game to pace a 3-1 victory. Gary Ricketts and Russ Kil kenny engaged in a pitchers' battle as the Eagle hurler gave up one run on five hits while walking only two batters and striking out eight. Errors killed the Mustangs as the Eagles scored two runs on two Heppner bobbles in the fifth frame to go with another tally they picked up in the third. The Mustangs' lone score came in the third as Jim Doherty and O'Donnell both doubled. Doherty was the big man with the bat as he swatted two doub les in three trips. Dave Speck swung the big timber for the Eagles with 2 for 4. In the second game. O'Donnell gave up just three infield hits. &11 in the first inning, and walk ed none. The Mustangs tallied all their runs in the third with a walk, a single by Roger Leon nig, a single by Doherty.O'Don r.ell's sacrifice fly and a two-run double by Rick Johnston. Jeff Turner was medalist for the tournament. The Dalles course is a par 71, 35 for the first nine and 36 for the second Five Heppner boys participat ed, including Turner, Russ Kil kenny, Pat Kilkenny, Mike Sweeney and Jon O'Donnell.
