Spearheaded by Tim Smith's
victorious two-mile and second
place finishes by Dave Hall tin

Wagenblast (in the discus.
Htppner' track team took sixth
place in the big Mac Hi Carn
ival of Speed last Friday.
Another Morrow county cin
derman. Sophomore Frank Halv
orsen of lone, came up with a
fine performance in the high
jump. His 5'11V leap gave him
a tie for first in the event.
The Mustangs' 15 points put
them bel::nd Baker, (which won
in a close team battle by tally
ing 3m points,) Pendleton (33),
Mac Hi Ol'-s), La Grande (22),
and Des&les of Walla Walla
(201): but placed them ahead
of such larger schools as Herm
iston and Walla Walla.
Smith clocked a swift 10:15.9
in winning the two-mile, his
bfst of this year and third all
time fastest. Hall skimmed the
lows in 14.2 and added a fourth-
ace broad jump with a leap
or 19.8". The discus finals show
ed Wagenblast heaving the
plate 135'8 3 4", which was only
6 V short of the winning toss.
Another outstanding mark
posted by the Horsemen was
their 1:38 half-mile relay. This
equalled the HHS school stand
ard, although the Mustangs did
not place in the event. The re
lay was composed of Dean Kin
dle, Bill McLeod, Jim Jacobs,
and Dave Hall.
Several other Mustangs, al
though not placing, nevertheless
c; me un with promising efforts.
Bili McLeod toured the S80
course in 2:07.5. barely being
edged out for fifth place. Prom
ising Bui Wolff, only a fresh
man, ran his first mile in 5 min
utes and 16 seconds, while an
other rookie, Dave Wright,
sprinted the quarter-mile in 58.6.
Jim Jacobs was timed at 57-
fiat in the 440, while Dean
Kindle finished out of the
money in the low hurdles, al
though clocking a 14.7. Other
marks posted included McLeod s
5'G" hign jump, Dean Kindle's
13'10" broad jump, and Steve
Baker's 10-foot pole vault.
Heppner High's baseball team
took its league opener on the
chin against Wahtonka Satur
day, 3-1, but came right back to
square the doubleheader as Den
nis O'Donnell struck out 16 in
the second game to pace a 3-1
victory.
Gary Ricketts and Russ Kil
kenny engaged in a pitchers'
battle as the Eagle hurler gave
up one run on five hits while
walking only two batters and
striking out eight. Kilkenny J ' :
fartnpri oirrht u.-Viila u.allrincr five ! 1
Eagle batsmen.
Errors killed the Mustangs as
the Eagles scored two runs on
two Heppner bobbles in the fifth
frame to go with another tally
they picked up in the third. The
Mustangs' lone score came in
the third as Jim Doherty and
O'Donnell both doubled.
Doherty was the big man with
the bat as he swatted two doub
les in three trips. Dave Speck
swung the big timber for the
Eagles with 2 for 4.
In the second game. O'Donnell
gave up just three infield hits.
&11 in the first inning, and walk
ed none. The Mustangs tallied
all their runs in the third with
a walk, a single by Roger Leon
nig, a single by Doherty.O'Don
r.ell's sacrifice fly and a two-run
double by Rick Johnston.

Meet a national resource named Steve
Steve Is a cross-country track man, an artist,
and an explorer of worlds that do not exist. That
toothpick model Is an attempt to study what
lies beyond our three known dimensions.
At the 1966 International Science Fair, Steve
won a ribbon for his theory of dimensions. But he
didn't stop there. He believes the number of
other dimensions Is limitless, and Is hard
at work to prove It.
Why our Interest in Steve? Because young
people are our greatest national resource.
They deserve all the help they can get
toward realizing their potentials.
Contributing to science fairs, providing
scholarships and fellowships, refinery tours
and geology tours, and teaching materials
for schools, are just some of the ways our
