Bauman rep resented Morrow county at the Region 8 office of Civil Defense Law Enforcement Seminar at tended by leading officials from five northwest states, March 13 15, inclusive, at the Davenport Hotel, Spokane, Wn. Following conferences by nationally-known authorities, ap proximately 100 conferees from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington participated in a series of workshop sessions de signed to inform regional, state, county, and municipal officers at command level on the role of emergency police services in the shelter-oriented community. Subjects included mobile sup port and mutual aid; traffic con trol; explosive ordnance recon naissance and nuclear accident hazards; radiological monitor ing; and related instruction. Wilcox issued a warning to day that ticks will begin to emerge from their nesting areas now that warmer weather is be ginning to occur east of the Cas cade mountains. Ticks may in fect people with a number of diseases, including a type of paralysis which can be fatal. Most common of these diseases are Kocky Mountain sponea fever and Colorado tick fever. One case of tick paralysis oc curred in Umatilla county in 1961. Should a person find a tick imbedded in the skin, the tick should not be pulled out directly, because it may leave its head in the victim. Rather, ticks should be encouraged to back out by applying a hot wire, the heated point of a knife or a lighted cigarette to the exposed portion of the tick. Also, the tick may be coated wtih turpen tine or a thick oil for a few minutes. If the tick is too deeply imbedded or is fully engorged with blood, removal by a phys ician may be necessary. Removal within a few hours generally protects the individual from in fection with tick paralysis. There is now available a vac cine for protection against Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Persons living in or working contin uously in tick-infested areas should , confer with their phys ician recardine annual immuni zation. However, there is no vac cine at present for Colorado tick fever and the otner ticK-Dorne diseases. Need a special kind of en velope for a special purpose? Spring Deposits, Loans Set Mark At First National Record highs for springtime deposits and loans were posted by the First National Bank of Oregon, it was announced by ttaipn j. voss, president. Deposits of $893,760,887 were reported compared with $866,423, 020 in April a year ago. Figures were announced in -response to me quarterly statement of con dition called for by the comp troller of the currency, as of March 26. Loans outstanding in tVn statewide 88-office banking or ganization totaled $502,072,518 for a gain of $18,959,569 over tne April, i9bl tigure. The HeDDner branch nf First National reported first quarter deDOsits of $5,178,748 anrl. lnano outstanding of $2,679,052, accord ing to urancn Manager, J. H. Bedford. Comparable totals for the branch a year ago were $4,967, 771 in deposits and $2,461,217 in loans. During the first quarter of 1962 the First National added a branch in the new Tigard Shop ping Plaza and moved the Gate way branch to an expanded new building at N. E. 104th Avenue and Halsey street. Under construction is the new 18th and Oak Street office in Eugene, which is now operating in temporary quarters on the building site. Another branch under construction will be open ed next year in Portland when pany completes its new office the Standard Insurance Com-building. Rhea Creek Club Has Livestock Tour "Housewife demands for lean er beef has caused feeders to feed for wen-marbled meat with out excess fat," Nels Anderson told the Rhea Creek 4-H Live stock club Saturday during tneir annual tour of the members' livestock projects. This demand for leaner meat will change the judging of the top price beef animal from the prime animal to the choice. The tour, starting at 9 a. m., from the Rawlins home, included farms of all the members. Swine and beef animals were judged and reasons for placing were discussed. Debits for February, 1962, to taled $29,997,558. For January, 1962, the total was $35,186,195, and for February, 1961, the total was $29,923,479. Oregon with 235 banks report ing, had a decrease in bank debits in February, 1962 of 16.3 per cent compared with January, 1962, and an increase of 1.8 per cent from February, 1961.
