A strung wrlteln campaign waa waged by Berl Aker. lone for the poMtlon held by Fred rick Martin of lone, but Martin won handily by a vole of 3X8 to 241 for Akers. Akera did carry a majority In two precinct a. Board man and Hardman. and won a tie with Martin. 60 to 60 In the lone voting. Turner also garnered more votes than did Nelson In Boardman and Hard man but lagged behind In all other precincts. The total vote gave: Harvey Warner. Irrlgon. 536; Fredrick Martin. lone. 388. Berl Akers, lone 241; DO Nelson. Lexington. 396. Don Turner, Lexington 238; Elaine Ceorge, Heppner 534. All communities also elected local committee representatives at the Monday election, but In only two communities were there contests. At Lexington four persons sought the three seats. They were Stanley Kemp, Gene Cutsforth, Elmer E Tadberg and Gene Majeske. and voters pick ed Kemp, Majeske and Padberg In close voting. In lone five persons sought the three positions. They were Helen McCabe, Don McElligott. Bryce Keene. Milton Morgan and Iewis Halvorsen. The first three were elected. When the levy Is approved by the voters, the district will then contract with the City of Hep pner to provide fire protection for the area. The city this week OK'd a contract for the purchase of a new $20,000 fire truck to serve the district. At the general election in Nov ember the district will vote on a regular tax base. A public hearing on the dis trict budget will be held Friday, May 6 at 8 pm in the IOOF hall in Heppner. FARMERS UNION TO MEET The Morrow county Farmers Union will meet Tuesday, May 10 at 8 p m at the O W Cuts forth ranch near Lexington. The new cUm A pumper will be mountetl on a 4 wheel drive tntomntinnal truck chassis and will carry 1000 gallon of water. The truck Is to be pun-naseu Lexlncton Implement Co. It U hoped that delivery can be made by about tne middle of July so it Mill be available during the wurst part of the summer fire season. The truck will be ultimately nald for bv the rural district which will contract with the city for fire protection. The district will vote on a tax levy at the May 20 Primary, but the city rushed the order on the truck in the hope it can be available during at least part of the sum mer. Annexation 8MB Near The council received a petition Monday night signed by 100 per cent of the residents of Barratt's Addition on Hinton Creek ask ing that they be annexed to the city effective July 1 of this year. The council took no action on the petition, Inasmuch as It can not be effective for another two months, but ordered the city at torney to prepare the necessary ordinance to make possible the annexation at that time. Residents of the area had pre viously met with the council to toll nvpr the possibility of an- nvainn And the petition was the result of 'that meeting. No vote will be necessary as an at fected residents agreed to the proposal. The need for sewer to the area brought tne question iu a head. At the earlier meeting the council explained how sewer service could be obtained If the addition came Into the city and an estimate of about $12,000 was set as the cost. At Monday night's meeting, the council learned that possibly a pumping station can be Installed to lift sewage to present city sewer mains at a smaller cost. If a lift station were Installed, It would save nearly 2000 feet of line and reduce the cost to some thing around $8,000. The plan will be given further study by the council. The council approved the re appointment of Albert Connor and C E McQuarrle on the clt hnriiret committee which will meet soon to work on the ritv budget for next year. Injured In the accident were Kutherlne MrW Swart. 18, La Grande high school senior; and Norman Howell, 17. Heppner senior. Miss Swart suffered a broken opine, but physicians re ported no paralysl and that she Is progressing satisfactorily. Howell had minor contusions and bruises and was treated at Pioneer Memorial hospital and released. The accident occured about 3:15 Sunday afternoon at the ind of the Ralph Thomp son ranch on Willow creek. The car left the road at a slow speed and was nearly Hopped when It slid sideways in loose gravel and overturned down a steep 40 foot embankment. Lesser was pinned beneath the car. Wit nesses to the accident, who were In cars immediately behind the Lesser vehicle, could report no apparent cause for the wreck as the car had been traveling only 3o to 33 miles an hour.
