HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Thursday. October 29, 1959 "OVER THE TEE CUP" By JACKIE LABHART This being the season of Hal lowe'en the tee cup this week will be "brewed" under "be witching" conditions, and should I suppose be written by a "ghost writer"; but I shall enaeavur w keep you in "suspense" by re lating the "ghoulish" golfing gossip and "hair-raising" hap penings of this past week. Fifteen "phantom" type female golfers floundered around the fairways at our weekly ladies day competition Tuesday, but a few of the lady link lovers did shoot a pretty good game. The fearless fifteen were Sue Valen tine, Dee Gribble, Sue Jones, Inez Meador, Hazel Mahoney, Faye Ruhl, Coramae Ferguson, Marguerite Chapin, Hester Cres wick, Gene Case, Marie McQuar rle, VI Lanham, Cork Norene and myself. New golf balls were a warded to Cork for having the lowest net score (48-21-27) and Hester for having the least num ber of strokes (3) on the hidden hole, which was no 7. Other good games were shot by Dee with a 42-9-33, Vi with a 42-8-34, and I had a 36-8-28. GHASTLY GOOFS: the No 4 hole seemed to be "haunting" Sue Valentine, for her drive Just made it down over the bluff, her second shot went into the fence, then her third shot seemed to be flying like a "witches' broom stick" right for the green when it hit the top of a tree and bounced back behind her about 20 feet (this is very unusual for Sue because she is one of our better golfers) ... I guess Gene was trying to get into the "spirit" of the season on the No 5 hole for she spent quite a bit of time in the swamp looking for her golf balls which seemed to dis- aDDear Into nowhere ... and little invisible "goblins" seemed i to be deliberately deflecting Vi's putts on the No 3 green . . . i mlsspd eettine an eagle on the long hole by just Inches be cause I was "scraed still" ana too tense to stroke my putt firm ly .. . Inez and No 8 just couldn't seem to negotiate. S.mdav was a glorious day for golf and among the numerous nlmrods on tne course were n-aj and Creston Robinson, Helen and Ed Schaffltz, Coramae and Ray mond Ferguson, Oscar Peterson, Reverend Rydgren, Gerald Peter son, Suzanne and Bob Jepsen, Rosetta and Ted Palmatecr, Bob bie and Jim Drlscoll, Bill Col lins, VI and Conley Lanham, Frank Anderson and Father Spencer. T think our aonle tree by the No 2 green holds the same "fatal fascination" as another wen known ADDle tree, for those who try to pluck its fruit seem to end up in the "applesauce '. sun day, Jim Drlscoll, after having a rathpr rough nine noies, ae Iririort hp needed a little nourish nipnr Iipfom starting the second nine, so with crim determination he started across the bridge in search of the "forbidden fruit and in the process the wheel of his golf cart snagged on one of tr-e posts and Into the murny muddv creek descended all of his golf clubs. (Needless to sal, Jim at this point was probably won dering what "black cat" had crossed his path. But with the help of his fellow "ghoulfers" he managed .to Iish out an nis clubs.) Then on ladies day Cork and I were sitting on the No 2 tee waiting for the foursome a head to hole out, when much to our amazement we saw Gene Case throwing one of her irons repeatedly at the aforementioned apple tree; it seams as tho' she was trying to knock down one Hardman Rebekahs Visited By President Mistletoe Rebekah lodge no 25 of Hardman met in special ses sion Friday, Oct 16 for the offic ial visitation of the president of the Rebekah Assembly of Ore gon, Mrs Rose Vose. Mrs Vose spoke to the lodge and then there was a question and answer period on problems of .special concern to the Hard man lodge. II was reported that seven of the members attended the dis trict convention held at lone Oct and that five members put on the flag drill.
