HEPPNER GAZETTE Prospects Bright For Fishermen If the weather holds for the next couple of days as fine as It has been county fishermen can expect excellent conditions for the opening of the fishing season Saturday. All streams in the county are clear and not too high and should remain so unless heavy rains should some Friday. Neither Willow or Rhea creeks have yet received any fish, the game commission reports, but a load has been planted In Rock creek. Fossil Club Slates Junior Rodeo The Fossil Bit and Spur riding club announces plans for its third lunlor rodeo to be held June 6 and 7 at the Fossil fair grounds. The show Is OJRA ap proved and entry blanks can be obtained from Mrs Donna Hardy: Condon. Girls between 9 and 18 years are eligible to participate In the junior rodeo queen selection which will be held Saturday af ternoon, May 9 at the Les Marks residence. Invitations have been extended to girls from Grant, Wheeler, Morrow and Gilllajn counties to participate. They must ride by Miss Rodeo Ore gon rules on horsemanship, rid ing ability, personality and ap pearance. CLASS VISITS PAPER Over 32 members of Mrs Har old Erwin's 6th grade class at Heppner grade school toured the Gazette-Times plant Tuesday to learn something of the intraca cies of publishing a newspaper. Several parents accompanied the youngsters. The group watched part of the preparations for today's paper. BURGLARY REPORTED State police reported that the Pat Cutsforth home north of Lex ington was burglarized Friday afternoon and four rifles were stolen. Early this week two of the guns were recovered In Ukiah where they had been sold by un known parties. Mr and Mrs Creston RobUon and children Vickie and Dean and Mrs Lena Kelly were visit ing relatives at Long Creek, Mt. Vernon, and Tralrle City over the weekend. Mr and Mrs John Venard left Friday for Merrill, Oregon where they will make their new home. Mrs E O Williams of Pendle ton is here visiting at the home of her son, Mr and Mrs John Williams. Mr and Mrs Ralph Thompson were In Seaside whore they vis ited her sister, Mrs Ella Jean Burns. They left Friday and re turned on the following Tuesday. April 23, 1959 Heppner FBLA Again Has State Officer For the third year In a row the Heppner chapter of Future Business Leaders of America at Heppner high school have a mem ber elected to state office. Carolyn Carter, a Junior, was elected to the post of state re porter at the state FBLA confer ence held at Corvallis April 17 18. Last year Janice Martin was state reporter and the year be fore that Jim Morris held the top post, that of state president. Fifteen delegates from the Heppner chapter attended the meeting accompanied by Mrs Roy Kirk, their advisor. Others be sides Mrs Kirk taking cars were, Mrs Ervin Anderson and Joe Stewart. Stefan i's Slates Grand Opening Two groups of entertainers will be featured at the grand open ing of the Harvest Room at Stefani's Fine Foods In lone Sat urday night. The two groups who will appear during the evening are the Centennial Sweethearts,! a trio of Portland girls who spec-1 ialize In vocal, dancing and com edy numbers will appear at three shows during the evening. The Royal Dukes trio, will play for dancing during the evening. The modern restaurant and lounge was opened recently by A A StefanI in specially design ed quarters on Main street. SCHOOL BUDGET Continued from Pane 1 school district, that voting at school elections will be by reg ular voting precinct, rather than by previous school district basis. The polling place in each dis trict will be the school building, and all four Heppner precincts will vote at the school. It was also decided to hold board meetings on the second Monday of each month. Mrs Abrams Heads TB and Health Assn The, Morrow County TB and Health Association held their an nual meeting at Stefani's In lone on April 13, with 22 members present. Kenneth Ross, executive secre tary of the Oregon State TB and Health Association was the guest speaker. New officers elected for the hroming year were president, Mrs Robert Abrams; vice president, Mrs Gene Pierce; secretary, Mrs Harry O'Donnell, Jr; treasurer, Mrs W W Weatherford and pub licity chairman, Mrs Charles Col lins. Robert Abrams was In Fossil and Condon Friday of last week on business. Mr and Mrs Robert Miller of Condon were Heppner visitors on Sunday. MI WW Men's And Women's Sizes SAVE If9 CAROLE ANNE ANDERSON Carole Anne Anderson Receives UP Award Carole Anne Anderson, 18, t daughter of Mr and Mrs N C Anderson, Heppner, was awarded $100 as county winner of the Carl Raymond Gray Union Pac ific scholarship, according to Esther Kirmis, Morrow county extension agent Every year the Union Pacific Railroad offers a $100 scholar ship in agriculture or home ec onomics courses at Oregon State College to one boy or girl 4 H club member who is a junior or a senior In high school resid ing in counties served by the Union Pacific railroad and who have completed a satisfactory club program for three years or more. The award, given in honor of the late Carl R Gray, former president of the Union Pacific Railroad, Is available to boys and girls in ten western states served by Union Pacific. Carole Anne, a senior in Hepp ner high school, Is a 10 year 4-H club member. Beginning her club work in 1949 with a live stock project, she has since car ried sheep, swine, foods, clothing, food preservation and home liv ing projects. Carole Anne has been a junior leader for the past thre years. Two of these years she has led her own 4-H foods club of ten-year-old girls called "The Spoon Llckers." Besides her junior leadership activities she has act ed as camp counselor for the Morrow county 4-H summer camp for a number of years and attended 4-H summer school In Corvallis for four years. Carole Anne plans to enroll at Oregon State College in the fall. Hardman Cemetery To Be Renovated The Hardman cemetery board met Sunday and completed ar rangements for a clean up pro gram for the Hardman IOOF cemetery. The cleanup day will be held May 17 with a potluck dinner at noon at the Oddfellows hall. The cemetery will soon be sprayed by plane and all per sons who wish to save flowers are asked to remove them be fore the spraying. Mr and Mrs Bob Lovgren have donated the spray and Paul Hansen has do nated his time for the work. The renovation of the cem etery is a community project which is sponsored jointly by the Oddfellows and Rebekah lodges. The organizations took over renovation of the cemetery last year and It is hoped that most of the work can be com pleted this season. Cub Scout Parents Meeting Scheduled A meeting of parents of pres ent and future Cub Scouts will be held Monday at 8 p m at the Multipurpose room of the Heppner grade school. The meet ing had previously been called for the Christian church. The purpose is to select a cub master and assistant to head the group during the coming year. Morrow County Gun, Club HEPPNER Many Expected Here For Luther League Rally This Weekend From 50 to 75 teenagers will be coming to Heppner this week end for the spring Luther Lea gue rally sponsored this year by Hope and Valby Lutheran churches. Lutheran youth from Hermis ton, Pendleton, Walla Walla, La Grande, Baker and Nyssa will attend the two day meeting. Rev Robert Drewes of Trinity Luth eran in Hermiston will be the inspirational speaker on Sunday afternoon. Registration will begin at 3:30 p m Saturday at Hope Lutheran church followed by choir practice led by Arnold Melby. Before a picnic supper at Rhea Creek grange hall, Rev Rydgren will lead a Bible study on the theme of the rally "God's Word Transforms". Miss Esther Kirmis of Hope church will conduct league games and songs, which will be climaxed by a hayride to Valby church where the youth will gather for an evening of levotlon. Sundays activities begin with Sunday school at 9:45 a m at Hope church followed by a com bined Hope, Valby and rally wor ship service at 11:00 a m, with Rev Rydgren officiating. After lunch the business sess ion will begin. A banquet beginning at 5:00 p m will complete the day and tho weekend. John Hartman is to be master of ceremonies, with leaguers providing entertainment and the women of Hope and Valby churches serving a turkey dinner. The leaeuers will Stav in homes of the congregations and at the Northwestern Motel. This is the first time Hone and Valby Lutheran churches have been hosts to a league rally. Elsie A Stevenson Rites Held Monday Funeral services were held at Creswick Mortuary chapel Mon day for Mrs Elsie A Stevenson, 76, who died April 16 In Port land. The Rev Charles Knox of ficiated at the final rites and interment was in the Heppner Masonic cemetery. Mrs Stevenson was born Marcn 21, 1883 at Weston and lived for some years in Heppner. bhe had moved away from here nearly 30 years ago and had made her home In Portland for 13 years. Janice'Martin Named DeMolay Sweetheart Miss Janice Martin, daughter of Mr and Mrs Randall Martin, won the title of Sweetheart of this district of DeMolay chapters at Pendleton Saturday, April 18 at the district conclave. The Sweethearts representing different chapters were entertain ed with a luncheon by Mrs Don Braden and Mrs Wayne Harris at the Braden home. At 3:00 p m, dressed semi formal, they met at the Mason ic temple to be interviewed. After the banquet that even ing, Miss Caroline Bottom of Ny ssa was named alternate and Miss Martin crowned district Sweetheart. She received her crown for Sweetheart of the Blue Mountain chapter of DeMolay of Hermiston at their annual ball March 26 and will attend the state conclave, April 25 in Corvallis. POTLUCK CANCELLED The potluck dinner scheduled for Saturday night by the Elks has been cancelled to avoid con flict with the band carnival and other events set for the same night. HORSE SALE SET The Umatilla Sage Riders will hold their annual horse auction this year at the fair grounds in Hermiston since the large con signment of animals will require additional room. The sale will be held for two days, April 25 and 26. Many top registered quarter horses are coming from Kansas, California and the Portland area and registered Arabians are also consigned.
