HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Thursday, April 24, 1958 School Planners Meet at Boardman By MARY LEE MARLOW A school reorganization com mittee meeting was held here In the school cafeteria Tuesday night of last week with board members from Irrlgon and Boardman present to discuss problems and plans. Present were, Frederick T Martin, chair man of the reorganization com mittee from lone, and member of the rural school board; Don Hatfield, Lex, Wlllard Bak er, Boardman, and Bryce Keen, lone, committee members; Jack Flug, Heppner, county school superintendent; Gene Inskecp, Irrigon, superintendent of school; Irrigon school board members William Schmeder, Warren Mc Coy, James Keith, Elbert Eppen bach, Bessie Hobbs and Marg urite Houghton, clerk; Board man board members, Roy Part low, Wlliard Baker, Arnin Hug, Henry Gantenbein and Harold Kress; rural board members, Dewey West, Boardman, and James Henderson, Irrigon; Sig vald Aase, Boardman superin tendent of school; and Joyce FOLLETT MEAT CO. Miss Jean Scott, Village miss ionary, who has filled the pul pit at the Boardman Communi ty church for the past seven and one-half years, has resigned and will leave here this week. She will go from here to Seattle, Wash t0 visit her mother, Mrs Mattie Scott, before taking up further church work. Mr and Mrs Merrill Shaw, Village missionaries from Hunt ington, Ind. have arrived to fill the pulpit at the church. They formerly had charge of a church in Marion, Ind. The Rev William Snyder, pas tor of the Umatilla Presbyter ian church, was guest speaker at Community church Sunday night, and conducted commun ion services. Charlie Nickerson was called to Boise, Idaho last week by the death of his son, Willard Nick erson, who died there Apr 14 from a heart attack. His surviv ors besides his father include two sisters, Mrs Esther Knight of Portland, Mrs Robert Hilder of San Bernardino, Calif, and a brother, Charlie Nickerson, Jr of Missouri. Funeral services were held Apr 19 in Boise. Mr and Mrs Zeal Gillespie went to Fort Lewis Wash Sun day to visit their son, Pfc Don ald Gillespie, at the Madigan General hospital there, to be gone until Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Joe Crouch and children went to The Dalles Sun day to visit Crouch's mother, Mrs Clara Crouch. This was in the form of a dance, held at the gym. Later refreshments were enjoyed in the cafeteria Some of the parents in charge were Mildred Davidson, Jerry Doherty, Annetta Klinger, Juan ita Martin and Eileen Padberg. The following boys were given basketball letters: varsity bas ketball, Joe Palmer, Tommy Pointer, Jimmy Martin, Kenny Klinger, Lee Padberg, Kirk Mat hews. J V basketball, Billy Klinger, Rodger Schoonover, Dan Wardwell, Tony Doherty, Don nie Van Winkle, Frank Robin son, Frank McFadden, Gordon Nichols, Dale Adlard, Stephen Peck, Kenny Jones, and Joe Halvorsen. Mag awards, were given to Donald Majeske, Billy Weatherford. Joe Palmer was givena special award as honor ary captain, and Tommy Pointer as the most improved player. Yell leaders Linda VanWinkle, Beverley Davidson, and Janet Palmer were given awards for their fine job at this time also. The speech festival ribbons were given this night as they had not been presented earlier and the following were mentioned: Bev erley Davidson, Linda VanWin kle, Martha Doherty, Leora Mae VanWinkle, Tony Doherty, Dan Wardwell and Kirk Mathews. The ladies prepared hamburgers with all the trimmings which the children greatly enjoyed. Miss Dona Barnett and Mrs Trina Parker were Pendleton vis itors on Monday. Mr and Mrs W E McMillan were Cove and La Grande vis itors this week. Mr and Mrs George Irvin are spending some time in Portland where Mrs Irvin is receiving medical attention. Mr and Mrs Don CamDhpll and family of Eueene were visitors at the home of his parents, Mr ana Mrs Roy Campbell over the weekend. Don was a guest speaker for N C C Day at Wen atchee, Washington. Mr and Mrs Bert Breeding of Stanfield were Lexington visit ors on Sunday. tarl Miller of Portland was a Sunday dinner guest at the home of Mr and Mr M V Nolan, and at the C C Jones home. Mr and Mrs Warren Dillon and children Debbie and Jimmie of Coeur d'Alene, Ida were week end visitors at the home of Dil lon's parents, Mr and Mrs Charl ie Dillon, and his .brother-in law and sister, Mr and Mrs Jack Getz. Sunday visitor at the Dil lon home was L A Compton of Hermiston, father of Mrs Warren Dillon. Mrs Daisy Piercey of Portland and Mrs Dora Childers of The Dalles were Saturday visitors at the home of Mr and Mrs Rollin Bishop. Mrs Royal Rands was hostess for the Boardman Garden club Monday afternoon at her home Mrs Louise Earwood was co-hos tess. A nominating committee was appointed to select candi dates for next year's officers as follows: Mrs Rollin Bishop, Mrs Root and Mrs Nathan Thorpe. Continuing the study of wild birds reports were given on the following birds: English spar row, Mrs Thorpe; mourning dove, Mrs Tim Rippee; ' Bob white quail, Mrs Earwood; whippoorwill, Mrs Root; house wren, Mrs Walt Wyss. Mrs Earl Briggs had on dis play a white orchid plant in bloom, which was won as a door prize by the late Mrs Ed Kunze at the Blue Mountain district convention held in Umatilla in 1956. Guests at the meeting were Mrs Betty Stebbins of Seattle, Wash, house guest at the Rands home, and Mrs Ray Brown. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs Arthur Allen May 19, with Mrs Tim Rippee as co-hostess.
