Those going to Portland last week during the spring vacation were Mr and Mrs Lloyd Morgan and children, Mr and Mrs Charles O'Connor and daughters, Mr and Mrs Berl Akers and children, Ms L F Leathers and children, Mrs Earl McCabe and daughter, Ar lcta. Mr and Mrs Roger Kincaid and children snent Sunday in The Dalles with her uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs Art Hoppell. They celebrated the birthdays of Tracy Kincaid and Mr Hoppell. Mr and Mrs Norman Bergstrom and daughters of Brookings spent the spring vacation with his par ents, Mr and Mrs Carl Berg strom and other relatives. Mr Bergstrom is superintendent of the Brookings schools. Lyle Kincaid made a trip to Portland last week where he vis ited Mr and Mrs Huston Bryson. Ed Colvin of Portland brought him home. Others there were Mr and 'Mrs O L Lundell, Mr and Mrs ; Walter Dobyns, Mr and Mrs Sam Esteb, Mr and Mrs Donald Ball and family, Mrs Imogene Moon ey, Mrs Edith White and Elmer Petersen, and Mr Ball. Games were played and refreshments were served. j Mrs David Baker and Mrs Ted jPalmateer were hostesses at the I Alter Society of St Williams 'church meeting Thursday even ing, March 20. A potluck dinner was served in the St Williams i church basement Sunday even ing, March 23. Mr and Mrs Charl jes Doherty were presented with a money tree. I Mr and Mrs C B Senseney of Portland spent the weekend with : their daughter and family, Mr 'and Mrs Charles Hudson. Jonah Troedson and son, Carl, attended the funeral services of I Jack Nelson in San Jose, Calif re cently. Mr Nelson was a brother of the late Mrs Johan Troedson. The Troedsons made the trip by plane. Rev Charles Wilkes and Mrs Wilbur Akers took the following boys to Kennewick, Wash Sat urday to a Nazarene church youth ball game: Ivan, Ralph and John Akers, Leslie Madden, Jack Crum, Wayne Hams, Bruce Rigby and Harry Swart. Mr and Mrs Fredrick Martin and family spent the spring va cation in Coos Bay, West Linn and Dallas. Mr and Mrs Wallace Gaars land and Mrs Ida Coleman, Mary Ann Williams went to Portland last week. Mr Gaarslnnd return ed home Sunday. Linda Heimbigner, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Heimbigner was one of the contestants in the United Nations Pilgrimage con tset at Pendleton Saturday ev ening, Marcli 22. Susan Ander son of Umatilla was the winner. Others going from here were Mr and Mrs Ray Heimbigner, Mrs Milton Morgan, Mrs Ernest Hcl iker, Mrs Wallace Matthews and Mrs Cecil Thome. Mr and Mrs Roy Lindstrom and children, Stephen and Susan, spent the weekend in Portland. Mrs Anna Lindstrom went down with them and remained for a longer visit with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs War ren Crutcher near Gresham. Services were , held in the Community church .with the Rev Jack Chan officiat , ing. The church choir, Ouida Cork, Rita Cupper, Pat Chan, Mil dred Beardsley and Wayne Lea thers sang with Mrs Janice Cork as accompanist. ! Burial was in the Monument cemetery under the direction of 'Driskills Mortuary of John Day. I Mrs Capon was born March 21, 18G7 in England. She was marr ied to John Urban Capon in 1887 and five children were born to the couple. The Capon family moved to Oregon in 1892. She is survived by Mr and Mrs Geor-; ge Capon, Kimberly; Maryi Wright, Mr and Mrs Ray Wright! of Heppner; Mrs Ida Slocum, Monument; Mrs Harry Capon, Kimberly; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Proceed ing her death were her husband John, a daughter, Mrs Nora Boy- I er of Monument; a son Harry Capon, Kimberly; and a step daughter, Alice McDuffie, form erly of Heppner. Among the out-of-town rela tives attending the services were Mr and Mrs Harold Wright, Mr and Mrs Barton Clark, Mrs Mary Wright, Mr and Mrs Ray Wright of Heppner; Mrs Mary Beauman i and Mrs Alva Mason of Burns I Mr and Mrs Herb Copland and I children of Salem; Mr and Mrs Herbert Hynd of Cecil. ! A benefit dance was held for Mrs Allen Stubblefield. A large crowd attended and around $200 i was taken in for her. She had a bad fall a year go which broke her hip, then when she thought l she was better, had to have surgery again. She is still on crutches. I Mrs Lydia Wilson and family, I of Heppner were over for the Stubblefield dance. Fred A Cox who has been help ing his brother Mix tear down and old house to rebuild, left Monday for John Day. j ' Maynard Hamilton left March 24 for The Dalles on business. I Henry Martin spent two or three days in John Day getting forestry records ready for the 'coming year. Marcella Strom and son Danny I is visiting at the home of her I sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs Henry . Martin. She will return to her l home in Salem the end of the J week. I Lillbern Hunt, son of Reeta Hunt, is stationed at the Marine Base at San Diego. ) Boyd Hinton drove R Robert son to Heppner Thursday for medical aid. I Ernie Johnson and daughter, Judy Martin drove to Heppner Sunday to visit Mrs Ernest John son who was staying for a week with her folks. ; Edna Moore and children drove to Heppner Thursday and returned Friday. Mrs June Ayers and two daughters of John Day came over Saturday to visit at the Harold Cork ranch. They returned home Sunday. Miss Luanno Jewell of Kinzua IONE School Notes Students from the lone school received the following rating at the speech festival in Irrigon Tuesday of last week: In the 6th grade, Stephen Lind strom, poetry reading, a blue ribbon; Arleta McCabe, memoriz ed humerous, a blue ribbon; Judy Sherer, story telling, a blue ribbon. In the 5th grade, Cheryle Lundell, prose, a red ribbon; in the 8th grade Michelle Morrison, extemporous reading, a blue rib bon; in the 7th grade, Katherine Rea, poetry, a blue ribbon and Ralph Martin, memorized hum erous, a red ribbon. In the High school John Howton received a blue ribbon for an after dinner speech and Evelyn Jepsen a blue ribbon for persuasive oratory. Mrs Earl McCabe, Mrs Milton Morgan and Roy Lindstrom took the children to Irrigon. Teachers from here who at tended the OEA in Portland last week were Dallas Shockley, Gary Stephenson, Mrs Emma Dally, Joe Hausler, Mrs Franklin Ely, Mrs Harriet Hall, Mrs Roxie Moeck. Most of the teachers and their families, also visited oth er relatives in the Willamette Valley. Mr and Mrs Donald Bro strom and son visited in Mon mouth and Mrs Allie Albertson visited in La Grande.
