At this time of year, there are frequent inquiries at this office on seedbed preparation, rates of seeding and kinds of grasses and legumes best suited to the var ious soil and rainfall conditions in Morrow county. One of the frequent questions is in regards to the inoculation of legume seeds. Legumes build up the soil. They restore organic matter in nitrogen to the soil, taking this nitrogen from the air. Inoculation causes nodules to grow on the roots of the legumes. These no dules are the nitrogen factor ies of the plant, enabling the plant to take nitrogen from the air. By taking nitrogen from the air, the crop yield is increased at no expense to the soil, the equality of the crop is improved due to higher protein content, and the soil is enriched for the betterment of. crops to follow. The Inoculation consists of bact- ; eria which causes nodules to i quickly grow, enabling the plant the air early in its life. The lnoc ulation process is simple and easy to follow and inoculantes of the seed certification pro- bacteria is available at 11 seed stores. It does not pay to risk crop failure by neglecting to in oculate legume seeds. Full dir ections on inoculating seed is printed on the label of every in- oculant can. Each year questions come to this office concerning seed cert ification standards, how certifi- cation is carried out and misc- j dleton on Wednesday and Thurs ellaneous other questions per- day of this week. The first days taining to this program. In or-1 session will be held at the Pen der that our people can be hett-, er informed on the seed certifi-1 cation program we will attempt , over the next few weeks to out line some of these which we 1 hope will be helpful to those in terested. The real purpose of seed cert ification in Oregon is to insure varietal identity and genetic pur- j ity. Only those varieties that con tain superior germ plasm are eli-j gible for certification. Certified j seed is high in varietal purity) and of good seeding value. Varieties eligible for certificat ion may have been in use many years, or they may have been produced recently through plant breeding In eitner case there ia giave uangct ui men through handling without a planned method of production that is consistently carried for ward. Seed certification is such a plan. Varietal purity is the first con- jsideration in seed certification. (Other factors, such as weed and , disease control, high viability, ! cleaning and grading, are also ' important.
