Call The Gazette Times, 882 The following la condensation of motorlog appearing In the July S Sunday Oregonian maga zine aectlon. It l one of an annual seirlps sponsored jointly by The Oregonian and the Oregon State Motor association. BY JAMES STUART SUM Writer, The Onconlsa So it's variety you're after In your vacation jaunt; none of this placid contemplation by a cool mountain stream. We've got just the ticket for you a long 1000-mile ticket, but worth every last cramp you'll feel when you come drag ging back to Portland. Generally, the tour amounts to a loop of central Oregon, touching such scenic and his toric spots as Government camp, Warm Springs. Bend. Burns, Wagontire (that's a fast touch). Valley Falls. Lakeview, Medford, Grants Pass, Ross burg. Eugene and the Willam ette valley. With hard driving you can make it to Lakeview the first day, although this distance (more than 400 miles) is not recommended unless you get an early start. This leg of the trip Is par ticularly interesting to these who hanker after scenery in varied, overwhelming doJages. Skiway Ride Suggested First, you are treated to the quiet grandeur of the forest and the west slope of Mt. Hood. Then, if you are in no hurry, stop for the Skiway trio up Mt. Hood from Government Camp. This side junket takes about an hour, costs a little extra, but rewards those who take it with an unexcelled view of the Cas cade valleys. After the stop at Mt. Hood, it is an easy drive into Bend, home of one of the finest steak houses in the state. Bend makes a good lunch stop. Don't be surprised, though if you eat a bigger lunch than usual here. Might as well, too, for the next stop is Burns, which looks more like the old west than a hun dred backgrounds for a Roy Rogers' movie. En route to Burns on high way 20 it's a good idea to stop and fill the gas tank at either Millican Bros, or Hampton. The latter makes an interesting stop, since the only gas station is equipped with a menagerie star ring a sleepy wildcat. Next stop is Burns, center of an immense cattle empire. Sur rounding Burns are high moun tains and endless, arid valleys, majestic in silence and loneli ness. Check the gas. oil and tires here, too, for the next stop will be many miles down high way 395 to Wagontire. After Wagontire. you're on your own so far as the human race is concerned. 1 'Vs. n i Crater lake's serene beauty never grows, tiresome. For more than 60 miles you whiz southward, passing dry Alkali lake and great cliffs that hover ominously above the highway. Through this part of the trip, your speed depends wholly on the condition of your car and your conscience. Some parts of the road stretch 12 miles to the horizon in a straight line. The road, incidentally, is ex cellent all the way past Lake Abert, the Abert rim on the eastern shore. Valley Falls and into Lakeview. The latter city, gateway to the Hart mountain antelope ref uge and isolated Warner valley, looks mighty good after a long day on the road. Two or three warnings here, though if you stop at the large and comfort able lodge just north of the city, don't be alarmed when you turn on the hot water. To be quite blunt, the water smells. Specifically, it smells of sul phur. Glance out your window and you'll soon see why a geyser near the lodge spurts up and down, supplying the hot water. 0 R E Ifr 0'N 1 Loop trip through Cascades, central and southern Oregon, Rogue and Willamette valleys. If you have time and feel up to a side trip that evening, back track up 395 to the good road leading into Warner valley. This road, at sunset, offers some of the most spectacular views to be found on this trip. Next morning, just a mite creaky, you'll leave Lakeview on highway 66 for Klamath Falls, then up highway 97 and 62 to Crater Lake national park. Crater Lake Lunch Stop Assuming an early start from Lakeview, you'll pull up to the Crater Lake lodge just in time for lunch. The lodge's dinfng room, which overlooks the lake, features some of the nicest look ing waitresses to be found in Oregon. The girls almost make you forget the prices. Crater Lake, of course is one of the scenic wonders of the Northwest and the world. It is impossible to describe the bluer-than-blue appearance of the water. Come equipped with a camera and lots of film for this stop. When this motorlog was taken in late June, the road around the rim of the lake was not onen Rpntfpn nlnnnoil hnw. ever, to have it ready by July 4. From Crater Lake you have several alternate routes for the return trip, we took highway 62 into Medford along the Rogue river canyon. You can't make good time on this road, hut win umn't want tn thst scenery is magnificent. crom Meaiord it's easy driv ing to Grants Pass, Roseburg and Eugene, a good city to stop for the night. If you have plenty of time, it might be bet ter to stop at Roseburg or even Grants Pass. The haul from Crater Lake via Medford to Eugene is mighty long.
