Heppner Gazette Times, Thursday, July 12, 1951 Local News In Brief By Ruth Payne Among those from Heppner shopping in Pendleton Friday were Mrs. Cliff Dougherty, Mrs. George Snoder, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lloyd, Archie Padberg and Harry Joslin. Mr. and Mrs. Pirl Howell and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wise re turned Sunday evening from a week end fishing trip on the Im naha river. Mrs. Allen Case departed Sun day for Seattle where she will spend the week attending buyers' market She was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Ida J. Grimes, who after the Seattle trip will remain in Portland for a time with another daughter, Mrs. Carl Leathers. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Thompson returned the last of the week from Portland where they spent several days on business and pleasure. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Beckett were weekend guests of s their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Johnson in Du fur. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Bennett left Saturday afternoon for Paulina Lake wheTe they will spend a week fishing. .Tudse and Mrs. J. G. Barratt left Wednesday for Salem where they will spend part of their vacation with his mother, Mrs. Eliza Bar ratt who is a patient at the Salem Memorial Hospital. A license to wed was issued Monday by County Clerk Bar low to Bessie Bachelder. 33, and Albert L. Livingston, 27, of Spray. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Thorson and children. Dick and Diane, left Thursday for their home in San Francisco after a visit in Hepp ner with her mother, Mrs. Cath erine Doherty, and other rel atives. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Hudson wtrnpd Saturday from a motor trip which took them into Idaho, Nevada, Utah and various omer nnints in the inter-mountain west. They were away for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Kenny of Baker were visiting relatives in Heppner the last of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Don Hatfield en tertained Saturday evening with a buffet supper at their country home in the Rhea Creek section. Present were Mr. and Mrs. John Ernsdorff, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Barger, Mr. and Mrs. Harry O' Donnell, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Alex Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Daggett, Mr. and Mrs. LaVeme Van Marter, Kenneth Jackson and Don Bennett. Among those from Spray who were shopping in Heppner were Mrs. John Keener and aaugn- ters, Mrs. Gene Campbell and Miss Karen Cress and Mr. ana Mrs. Ralph Reid. Sheriff C. J. D. Bauman made a trip to Salem Monday. Dr. and Mrs. Richard J. U'bnea returned Sunday from a three weeks' vacation in Canada where they visited at the home of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne uncner of The Dalles were weekend houseguests of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Massey. Ronald Reid left Monday for Portland where he will visit for two weeks with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs Thornton Dunn. Several local people were in Pendleton Saturday evening to attend the showing of Joie Chit wood's Daredevils at Round-up Park. Among those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rose wall. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Kejth ley, William Marquardt, Mr. and Mrs. William Cox, Mr. ana Mrs. Jack Mahon. Mrs. H. G. Carter, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Orwick, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Conner, Mrs. Frank Conner, Carl Thorpe and Miss Deloris Keenan. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Calvin moved their household effects from Portland Saturday and set tied in the Howard Keithley house on Water Street. Mr. Calvin has been in Heppner for several weeks and is parts manager for Rosewall Motor Company. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Christian and children have returned from a fortnight's vacation in Washing ton. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Butterfield of LaGrande were weekend vi sitors in Heppner. o CLASSIFIED ADS USE GAZETTE TIMES Heppner Lodge Hosts County Oddfellows and Rebekahs The annual picnic of Oddfel lows and Rebekahs of Morrow county was held Sunday at the Blue Mountain Ranch south of Hardman with Willows Lodge No. 66, I.O.O.F. of Heppner as Host. About seventy-five guests enjoyed the potluck luncheon at noon. During the afternoon a program of games including horseshoes and softball for a dults and various types of races for the youngsters was held. The committee in charge of arrange ments included Durward Tash, Cornett Green and Victor Gro shen. Among out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mc Daniel of Monument; Everett Hadley of Richland, Wash.; Osil Inskeep and Mr. and Mrs. Wal lace Mathews and daughters of lone; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ely and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Ely of Mor gan; and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Mc- Millian and Mr. and Mrs. Oris Padberg of Lexington. Iowa where he will attend the National Conference of Town and Country Work of the Methodist church to be held in that city July 20 to 24. Sorlien was chosen to repre sent the Portland district of the church at the meeting. His pulpit will be filled on Sunday, July 22 by members of the Gideons society of Pendleton. o Mrs. Barratt Hospitalized Word has been received that Mrs. W. B. Barratt, a pioneer and former resident of Morrow county, is in the Salem Memor ial hospital where she success fully underwent surgery a week ago for a broken hip. Mrs. Bar ratt, who will be 81 years old in August, is experiencing her first stay in a hospital as a pat ient during her lifetime of acti vity. According to her son, county judge Garnet Barratt, she would appreciate hearing from any of her friends in this area. Returning with them to Portland was their daughter Vir ginia Lou who had been stay ing with her grandparents. Turn er is employed in the public re lations department of the First National Bank of Portland. Scott Furlong is now operating the Richfield service station in Heppner. He took over July from Carl Thorpe who was forced to retire from the business be cause of illness. o Methodist Pastor to Leave for Eastern Meet J. Davis of Wllliatnsport, Pa., elected Grand Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA at 87th Grand Lodge convention in Chi cago, July 2. Blakes Return From Elks Convention Mr. and Mrs. Willard A. Blake returned last Saturday from Chi cago where they have attended the Elks convention in that city. Blake is Exalted Ruler of the Heppner lodge. Blakes left June 29 on the streamliner from Pendleton and while in Chicago stayed at the Stevens hotel. While attending the meetings he witnessed the installation of Howard R. Davis, Williamsport, Pa. who was elect ed Grand Exalted Ruler of the Lodge.
