One of the most thrilling of these tales was that told by Jess Mathis who lives in the small house purchased from Mrs. F. A. Fortier. He left the wa ter running a bit to keep it from freezing. This was quite effective, but the sink drain froze up and when the Mathis family wakened they found the kitchen a fine skat ing pond. The holy season of Lent has en tered its second week of warning and appeal to the souls of all Chris tians for it is the acceptable time, the time of salvation. Lent lasts forty days, excluding Sundays, in honor of the fast of forty days and nights of Christ in the desert. Lent should lead the Christian soul to do penance for his sins, which must be something terrible since their atone ment required the death of the Son of God. Jesus Christ in the words of the Prophet says to all: "All ye who pass by, stop and see if there is any sorrow like unto My sorrow." In St Patrick's church next Sun day, February 24th, there will be mass at 8:30, with confessions and Holy Communion. A second mass will be said in lone at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. O'Meara at 10:30. The pastor will also preach upon "Scandal. In the evening at 7:30 in Heppner will take place rosary, prayer, litany, devotions in honor of St Vianney, during five minutes, HARDMAN. Vaccine is Protection Against Tick Fever Persons residing in the North west often ask If the tick found in their locality is the same as the spotted fever tick, and if so why they do not have spotted fever. The dermacentor venustus is prob ably found throughout the state of Oregon. The infected tick however, is limited to certain valleys in east ern Oregon. In order to cause Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever it must carry the germs of this dis ease. The tick takes two years to complete Its life cycle. The adult ticks, male and female, are found from March until early July. Ticks are normally parasites of wild ani mals. They have become parasites of domestic animals and of man be cause man has gone into localities where they are present. Ten years ago there was practic ally no way of protecting man from the bite of the infected tick. The United States Public Health Serv ice at its laboratory In Hamilton Montana, has developed a vaccine which gives protection against Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. This vaccine will be available to every physician in the state of Ore gon after February 15th. The re quest should be made to "The Offi cer In Charge, U. S. Public Health Service, Hamilton, Montana." The request should state the num ber of persons for whom the vac cine is desired and will be filled in order of receipt Each lot of vac cine sent out will be accompanied by full directions for administra tion and by cards to be filled out closing with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. On Wednes days, Fridays and Saturdays, throughout Lent, there will be mass in the church at 7:45 a. m., with con fessions and Holy Communion. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays throughout Lent there will be eve ning devotions lasting three quar ters of an hour with special prayers to bring down God's blessings up on homes, city, and Nation, and suc cess in the year's business upon the people, regardless of creed. All are invited to assist at any and all of these services. The pastor will again this year on Good Friday, March 29th, respectfully ask all bus iness houses to close between noon and three o'clock, in honor of the last three hours of Christ's life upon earth. If one will live with Christ for ever after death, one's life must have Christ for imitation and ideal, there is no salvation outside of Christ and His sacred teachings. FIRE AT LEXINGTON. The Sanford Green house in Lex ington, occupied by Mrs. Helen Christensen, caught on fire Friday morning about 10:30. The fire started behind a cupboard near the floor and was not discovered until the kitchen and pantry were filled with smoke. The alarm was sound ed and a large number of men re sponded, the fire being extinguished with buckets and a garden hose without the use of the fire depart ment equipment. The house was not insured, and the damage will probably not exceed $250.00. for an answer, and those whom wo men marry.
