BOARDMAN
Paul M. Smith who has been here
on business has leased his ranch to
Z. J. Gillespie. Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Strobel and family have moved
from the Smith place to Al Macom
ber house in town for a time.
The P. T. A. Valentine dance giv

ful occasion. A large crowd was
present and enjoyed the old fash
ioned dances as well as the modern.
The home orchestra played. This
is composed of Victor Hango, Leslie
Packard, Nate Macomber, Miss
Henry, and Eldon Wilson. Serpen
tine and paper caps were added fea
tures of the evening.
A pleasant "no host" dinner was
that enjoyed Sunday at the Chas.
Wicklander home where the Meads.
Rands, Dillaboughs and Geo. Wick

bringing a portion of what made a
delicious dinner.

Sunday.
Mrs. F. A. Fortier was hostess last
Wednesday to the Home Economics
club, a social club auxiliary to the
Grange. After a delicious luncheon
the afternoon was spent in visiting.
A short business meeting was held.
Invited guests were Mesdames Por
ter, Blayden and Gorham.
The tale of frozen water pipes is
the gist of woe of all Boardman cit
izens for some time. One of the
most thrilling of these tales was
that told by Jess Mathis who lives
in the small house purchased from
Mrs. F. A. Fortier. He left the wa
ter running a bit to keep it from
freezing. This was quite effective,
but the sink drain froze up and
when the Mathis family wakened
they found the kitchen a fine skat
ing pond.
Lois Messenger entertained at a
Valentine party Saturday night All
the guests had a merry time and
after a number of games partook
of the bounteous lunch served by
Mrs. Messenger.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Richardson
and family were guests Sunday at
the W. H. Mefford home. Mr. and
Mrs. Root and son and Mr. and Mrs.
Ed Barlow were also guests. Mr.
Richardson, who was so seriously
ill for months is much improved
and able to be up and about daily.
but is unable to do any work.
Mrs. W. H. Mefford continues to
go to Hermiston every other day
continuing her course of treatments
with the chiropractor.
with the necessary data for each
person vaccinated. The cards should
be returned to the station furnish
ing the vaccine.
The vaccine should be kept in a
cool place but not allowed to freeze.
It is given hypodermically.
The vaccine is of no value in
treatment and should be given ten
days before exposure. It will pro

ing in infected districts should be
revaccinated annually. Each year's
vaccination increases the immunity.
Since this vaccine is provided free,
it is expected that no charge shall
be made for material. The vaccine
is distributed by the United States
Public Health Service to physicians
only.
ST. PATRICK'S CHURCH.
Rev. Thomns J. Brady, Pastor.
The holy season of Lent has en
tered its second week of warning
and appeal to the souls of all Chris
tians for it is the acceptable time,
the time of salvation. Lent lasts
forty days, excluding Sundays, in
honor of the fast of forty days and
nights of Christ in the desert. Lent
should lead the Christian soul to do
penance for his sins, which must be
something terrible since their atone
ment required the death of the Son
of God. Jesus Christ in the words
of the Prophet says to all: "All
ye who pass by, stop and see if
there is any sorrow like unto My
sorrow."
In St Patrick's church next Sun
day, February 24th, there will be
mass at 8:30, with confessions and
Holy Communion. A second mass
will be said in lone at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. J. P. O'Meara at 10:30.
The pastor will also preach upon
"Scandal. In the evening at 7:30
in Heppner will take place rosary,
prayer, litany, devotions in honor of
St Vianney, during five minutes,

ter business interests.

Victor Johnson who are working on
Rhea creek, spent Friday evening
here.
Kinnard McDaniel and Mr. and
Mrs. Sam McDaniel, Jr., spent the
week end with relatives and friends
They made the trip from Lone
Rock in a sleigh.
The girls of the Division 2 sew
ing club were charmingly enter
tained with a valentine party at the
school house by the boys of the
woodwork club. The evening was

Vaccine is Protection
Against Tick Fever
Persons residing in the North
west often ask If the tick found in
their locality is the same as the
spotted fever tick, and if so why
they do not have spotted fever.
The dermacentor venustus is prob
ably found throughout the state of
Oregon. The infected tick however,
is limited to certain valleys in east
ern Oregon. In order to cause
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever it
must carry the germs of this dis
ease. The tick takes two years to
complete Its life cycle. The adult
ticks, male and female, are found
from March until early July. Ticks
are normally parasites of wild ani
mals. They have become parasites
of domestic animals and of man be
cause man has gone into localities
where they are present.
Ten years ago there was practic
ally no way of protecting man from
the bite of the infected tick. The
United States Public Health Serv
ice at its laboratory In Hamilton
Montana, has developed a vaccine
which gives protection against
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
This vaccine will be available to
every physician in the state of Ore
gon after February 15th. The re
quest should be made to "The Offi
cer In Charge, U. S. Public Health
Service, Hamilton, Montana."
The request should state the num
ber of persons for whom the vac
cine is desired and will be filled in
order of receipt Each lot of vac
cine sent out will be accompanied
by full directions for administra
tion and by cards to be filled out
closing with Benediction of the
Blessed Sacrament. On Wednes
days, Fridays and Saturdays,
throughout Lent, there will be mass
in the church at 7:45 a. m., with con
fessions and Holy Communion. On
Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays
throughout Lent there will be eve
ning devotions lasting three quar
ters of an hour with special prayers
to bring down God's blessings up
on homes, city, and Nation, and suc
cess in the year's business upon the
people, regardless of creed. All are
invited to assist at any and all of
these services. The pastor will
again this year on Good Friday,
March 29th, respectfully ask all bus
iness houses to close between noon
and three o'clock, in honor of the
last three hours of Christ's life upon
earth.
If one will live with Christ for
ever after death, one's life must
have Christ for imitation and ideal,
there is no salvation outside of
Christ and His sacred teachings.
FIRE AT LEXINGTON.
The Sanford Green house in Lex
ington, occupied by Mrs. Helen
Christensen, caught on fire Friday
morning about 10:30. The fire
started behind a cupboard near the
floor and was not discovered until
the kitchen and pantry were filled
with smoke. The alarm was sound
ed and a large number of men re
sponded, the fire being extinguished
with buckets and a garden hose
without the use of the fire depart
ment equipment. The house was
not insured, and the damage will
probably not exceed $250.00.
