By L. A. HUNT. County Agent Femer Detrrmlara Quality, Muaatit;, Bat Are Krrurlly Nat S Vadrrataod. I A canvas of the majority of the grain Latter ,... , .v . ..... Oregon Agricultural College, Corval 11 3. Oct S. The difference between the test and the market weight of wheat is one of the common misuiKlerstanotngs in the grain business, says IV K. Hys lop. head of farm crops at O. A. C. "The teat weight is used only to de termine quality, or grade," says Pro fessor Hyslop. "A bushel Is 60 pounds In Oregon, and If the grains are plump and of good Quality a measured bushel will weigh 0 or more pounds. If shriveled the wheat in a measured bushel may not weigh more than 56 pounds, or if badly pinched as low as 44 pounds. But. this does not make the selling weight which Is 60 pounds regardless of how many pounds the wheat weighs to the bushel. The selling weight re mains the same for all wheat but the test weight varies with the quality, which determines its grade and price. The test weight is prescribed by the bureau of markets, federal department of agriculture, and to be fair must be made exactly as prescribed. "Light weight wheat 64 or 56 Hounds per bushel, is not so desirable for mill ing as similar wheat having a test weight of 60 pounds. The heavier wheat usually Is more plump and yields more flour. "Mills occasionally pay more for pinched wheat than plump, as it has a higher gluten content and is needed to strengthen the flour output. Hut the tendency In many cases has been to pay more for the soft starchy wheat that could be blended with the pinched wheat to weaken the gluten content." proved Forty-fold and Bluestem, the harvest of 1921 should show not les than 15.000 acres of certified seed of gocd strong vitality in Morrow county. that the average bushel of wheat as sold on the markets of Morrow county stands a discount for mixture and oth er deficiency due to mixture amounting to approximately 5 cents per bushel. Some dealers place it as -high as (.5 cents. The fact that the majority of the wheat la sold on sample does not alter the fact that the purchaser considers the value of the wheat from the grad ing standpoint at the regular govern ment grade apply In resales and export trade. The wheat crop of Morrow oounty this year Is from 1,600.000 to 1,750.000 bushels and this loss is no small Item for the county as a whole it amounts to nearly three times the money avail able for county road construction each year. To the man who has 5000 bush els to sell it means a loss of $250 dol lars a very tidy sum these hard times Kverybody knows that carefully se lected seed of standard variety, test and of good vitality will produce a heavier yield than seed that has degen erated through foul mixtures and im proper aelectlons from year to year. The amount of this difference Is difficult to estimate because of the variety of conditions but If It were only one bush el per acre, what would that mean to the average farmer? And from the standpoint of the county as a whole It would mean not less than 1200,000 per year. , Last year there were In Morrow county not to exceed 600 acres of grain of standard variety test. This year the Farm Bureau has examined andrertl fled over 6000 acres and from Informa tion available it Is believed that not less than 7600 acres of good seed were grown in the county. This increase is largely due to the shipment of Turkey and Hybrid last season. This year with the distribution of Im- ONLY TWO DRY COMMISSIONERS IN WORLD .m , fl ?,n1.! l7S BatlonaI Prohibition commissioner, In the worm for. the Un ted States and Finland. The county court of Morrow County calls attention of the public to the fact that at its September meeting, in com pl'ance with the wishes of a represen tative number of road districts within the county, assembled in the court room at that time and for that purpose, did redistrict the County in order to make the road districts smaller ' and more suitable to the residents of the var ious districts. A number of the districts are pe titioning the court to call a special road meeting In the district in order that the people of the district may talk over the matter of the road situation of the district and vote on a special road tax for the Improvement of spec ial places in the district that may es pecially require It. The present regular district money, which Is a 24 mill tax, the same as it was before the war, Is insufficient to take care of the district needs and a small special tax appears to be the best solution of the problem. Blanks for the petition may be had by applying to the county roarimaster or the county clerk. Such petition the law requires. Shall be signed by three or more free holders of the district and presented to the county court not later than its regular November meeting. W. T. CAMPBELL, County Judge. E. L.
