Weavers laid off by carpet factories because the war has caused a sharp decrease In the purchase of floor cov erings are demanded by woolen and cotton-duck factories because war or ders have so increased their busi nesses. Factories making gears and other articles tor pleasure automo biles are laying off help, while mak ers of trucks and service cars are call ing for more labor. Other Industries suffering losses in commercial business which result in treeing a large part cf their workmen for war work are manufacturers of fine kid gloves, fancy sweaters, brooms and brushes, typewriters, and lilgli-grado woodwork. Miss Pauline Nordllng gave a party to a number of her friends last Satur day afternoon, it being her 11th birthday. After playing various games a dainty lunch was was served. United States Now Imports Argentina Cheese; Exports Have Greatly Increased. In August of this year exactly 99 pounds of European cheese were im ported by the United States, coming from Italy. During 1914, before the war, 36,900 tons were bought in Eu rope, Argentina has turned to cheese making on a large scale, and is now placing large quantities in the United States, although more cheese is now being exported than imported. In September 1,000 tons were sold abroad, being distributed to 60 ccrun War's Demand For Men With Scien tific Training Will Steadily Increase. Secretary of War Newton D. Ba ker urges men in scientific institu tions to continue their training. "The Government service will de mand more and more scientifically trained men," said he, "and I hope those who are in charge .of scientific Institutions will impress upon the young men the Importance of contin uing their studies, except to the ex tent that they are necessarily inter rupted by a mandatory call under the provisions of the selective-service law." Every effort will be made to use each student's special training in con nection with specialized occupations in the Army, to afford technical stu dents liable to call as great an. op portunity through the National Army as it they had enlisted. Secretary of Agriculture to Issue Per. mits for Importation of Tickcy Cattle. To Increase the meat supply of the country bars have been lowered for the importation of cattle from the tick-infested Central and South American countries. Such animals must be slaughtered immediately at ports of entry. For the protection of domestic cattle and to make sure that only wholesome meat shall be produced from this source, regulations governing the im portations are very strict. A permit from the Secretary of Ag riculture is required for each con signment of cattle offered for importation. 20,000 Graduate Nurses Will be Re quired in Army Hospitals. With a continuance of the war, in the next year at least 20,000 nurses will be needed in Army hospitals at home and abroad. Ot the 80,000 graduate nurses of the country only 3,500 have so far been assigned to duty in Army service, and of this number 1,500 are in France. An Army nurse must be a graduate of a training school for nurses and must have served for two years in a hospital. They are assigned to duty in the United States or abroad, and preferences are granted when condi tions permit. Nurses who prefer not to have service abroad will have their preferences respected.
