During this period 2 permits wer issued In Umatilla county, as fol lows: To Herman Hurst and Telder Ol son, of Frewater, for the irrigation , of 10 acres from an unnamed stream. To Payne & Jaycox, of Waila Wal la, for the irirgation of 20 acres from Little Walla Walla River. During this period 1 permit was Is sued In Morrow county, as follows: To J. W. Osborne, of Cecil, for the irrigation of 20 acres from Willow creek. Sells Four Chandlers. Martin Reid, local agent for the Chandler car, has sold four of these machines. Frank Monahan took the first one and since that one, three other sales have been made: one to John Curran, and one each to N. E. Wlnnard and W. E. Brown. FAMOUS SPRINGS PROPRIETOR IS ENTHUSIASTIC BOOSTER Mrs. C. R. Davis and daughter of the Ritter Hot Springs were in Can yon City last week settling up the estate of Mr. Davis who died last fall. Mrs. Davis is an enthusiastic booster for the Ritter section of Grant county and a firm believer in the curative properties of the famous Ritter springs. She has been largely Instru mental in promoting the building of the road from Ritter to Heppner, a distance of 42 miles and which gives theRItter people an excellent outlet for their stock and produce. The major portion of this road was built by the Morrow county people. Can yon City Blue Mountain Eagle. Return From Visit to Crater Lake. Glenn Y. Wells and wife, accom panied by Mrs. Wells' father, arrived in Heppner Saturday evening from an extensive auto tour of Southern Ore gon. While away, Mr. Wells says they visited the fisherman's paradise of Oregon, the Klamath Falls coun try. They enjoyed boating trips over the Klamath lakes and spent much time fishing. The most enjoyable part of the trip was a visit to Crater Lake and the country surrounding It. Although the season is early and as yet the hotel has not been opened there, Mr. Wells says a large number of tourists are already finding their way there. Mr. and Mrs. Wells ex pect to leave in a week or two for Wallowa Lake to spend a few weeks In Oregon's Switzerland. Mr. Wells spent his vacation there last year and he Is quite enthusiastic over the mountains and lakes. Wild game and fish are In abundance there, and for mountain climbing and supberb grandeuer one could wish for noth ing better. On top of the Powder mountains Mr. Wells says, there la a chain of some forty lakes. U. S. ARMY IS BADLY IN - NEED OF COOKS AND BAKERS Postmaster Richardson has just re ceived the following letter from E. L. French, Sergeant General and Re cruiting officer at The Dalles which is self explanatory: U. S. Army Recruiting Station. The Dalles, Oregon, July 12, 1917. The Postmaster, Heppner, Ore. Dear Sir: I have Just received word from the War Department in Washington, D. C, that the Army needs at once sev enteen hundred cooks and bakers. Slight physical defects, that might bar enlistments in any other branches of the service will be waived in the case of cooks and bakers, they will have no military duties to perform and draw the pay and allowances of non-commissioned officers. , The Regular Army Signal Corps is badly in need of men who possess any of the following qualifications: Cable, telegraph and radio operators: inside and outside wiremen, electric ians; machinists; photographers; and men who are familiar with the con struction and maintenance of tele phone systems.
